Late TD Lifts R-MC Football past E&H

More news about: Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Brecht Heuchan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) hit senior Joey Hunt (Olney, Md./Sherwood) with a three-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds remaining as the Randolph-Macon football team outscored Emory & Henry 34-31 on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 34, Emory & Henry 31

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 5-1, E&H 3-2

How it Happened:

  • After three pointless possessions, two by the Yellow Jackets, the Wasps got a touchdown midway through the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Facing 3rd and 8 from the RMC 20, Heuchan hit junior David Wallis (Cedar Point, N.C./Croatan) on an 80-yard scoring strike as the Yellow Jackets knotted the score at 7-7 with 6:33 left in the first period.
  • R-MC put together an 11-play, 82-yard scoring drive, as senior Justin DeLeon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) reached the end zone from 10 yards away to give the home team a 14-7 advantage with 9:31 left until halftime.
  • Senior Jace DePriest (Sandston, Va./Varina) forced a fumble and sophomore Torryn Carey-Jarrell (Richmond, Va./Henrico) recovered on the EHC 24. DeLeon scored from six yards out as the Yellow Jackets took a 21-7 lead with 6:37 remaining until intermission.
  • The Wasps answered quickly with a touchdown to pull within seven at 21-14 with 4:58 left in the second quarter.
  • R-MC would march to the EHC 4, where senior Chris Vidal (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) hit a 21-yard field goal at the horn to give the Yellow Jackets a 24-14 lead at the half.
  • E&H had a bad snap on a punt and R-MC took over on the EHC 5, but a fumble on the one kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard.
  • Following a Wasp punt, R-MC moved to the EHC 3, but another fumble thwarted the drive.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a punt blocked through the end zone, with the safety making it 24-16. E&H took the kickoff, scored a touchdown and was successful on the two-point conversion to level the score at 24-24 with 4:38 left in the third period.
  • R-MC advanced to the EHC 9, where a 26-yard field goal from Vidal put the Yellow Jackets back on top 27-24 with 1:28 remaining in the third.
  • Following an exchange of punts, E&H scored the go-ahead touchdown with 10:05 left to take a 31-27 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets were stopped on downs on the EHC 34 with 6:44 remaining. The Wasps faced 4th and 2 on the RMC 27 when Devontae Jordan was stopped for no gain by sophomore Silas James (Greenville, N.C./JH Rose) as R-MC took over with 1:47 left.
  • Heuchan hit a nine-yard pass to senior Tim Hanratty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and a 49-yarder to junior Zach Bowman (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) to put the ball at the EHC 15. Following a rush for three yards by DeLeon and a pair of incompletions, R-MC faced 4th and 7 from the EHC 12 with 29 seconds remaining. The Wasps were called for pass interference on a toss toward Hanratty in the end zone, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball on the EHC 3. Heuchan hit Hunt in the end zone to give R-MC a 34-31 lead with 19 seconds left.
  • Senior Erik Harris (Carrollton, Va./Smithfield) picked off a pass on the first play following the kickoff and R-MC was able to run out the clock and secure the win.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC finished with 503 yards of total offense, with 235 on the ground and 268 through the air. Heuchan was 7 of 13 for 259 yards and two TDs.
  • DeLeon carried the ball 29 times for a career-best 202 yards and two scores.
  • Wallis had three catches for 160 yards and one touchdown. Bowman had two receptions for 87 yards.
  • Senior Jace DePriest (Sandston, Va./Varina) led the Yellow Jacket defense with eight tackles. He had two tackles for loss and forced a fumble.
  • R-MC won time of possession, holding the ball for 31:31.

For The Record:
