More news about: Springfield

Springfield, Mass. - October 9, 2021 - After waiting 693 days, the Springfield College football team returned to Stagg Field and rolled past Coast Guard, 60-0, in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday.

For Springfield, which last played at home on Nov. 16, 2019, the win boosted their record to 2-3, 1-0, while the Bears slipped to 2-4, 0-2. The 60-point margin of victory marked the best showing for Springfield since a 62-0 win at Maine Maritime in 2017.

The Pride totaled 548 yards of total offense, including 434 on the ground, while also limiting Coast Guard to just 42 offensive yards on 45 plays.  Springfield had 34 first downs in the contest and held the ball for 38:21.

David Wells (Shelton, Conn.) was impressive orchestrating the offense as he ran for 75 yards on nine carries and also threw for 79 yards and a score, while Isaiah Cashwell-Doe (Woburn, Mass.) had 68 yards on five carries to go along with a 35-yard reception.  Both Tim Callahan (Enfield, Conn.) and Patrick Ladas (Berlin, Conn.) each found the end zone twice.  Defensively, Aiden Lewin (Orlando, Fla.) made four tackles, including two tackles-for-loss and a pair of pass breakups, while Dante Vasquez (Rockland, Mass.) made five tackles on special teams.

It was an electric start for the Pride as Christian Hutra (Holmes, N.Y.) perfectly executed an onside kick to start the game as Springfield stole the opening possesion. Seven plays later, Callahan plowed his way in from a yard out to make it a 7-0 lead at the 12:11 mark.  A muffed snap on the Coast Guard's ensuing punt resulted in a fumble and Springfield took over at the 16 yard line.  Springfield's lead then grew to 13-0 on another one-yard score from Ladas at 8:54, and following another three-and-out, Springfield made it 20-0 just over two minutes later as Callahan found the end zone from four yards out.

After forcing the Bears off the field in three plays, the Pride's lead grew to 27-0 eight plays later at the 1:29 mark on another Ladas score, this time on another one-yard plunge.  Hutra cashed in from 34 yards out with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half to make it 30-0 before Wells found a leaping Ian Porter (Middletown, N.J.) for an 18-yard touchdown grab at 8:28.  With 5:33 left in the second, Cashwell-Doe muscled his way in from 14 yards out and Hutra buried a 33-yard field goal as the first half horn sounded as the hosts went into the locker room with a 47-0 cushion.

On their second drive of the third quarter, Joseph Cannizzaro (Lincoln Park, N.J.) bulldozed his way into the end zone from the four-yard line to push the Pride over the 50-point mark, and Jamari Jenkins (Pawtucket, R.I.) scampered around the left end for a three-yard touchdown with 11:31 left in regulation to complete the scoring.

The Pride will hit the road again next Saturday as it heads to Vermont to take on Norwich at 12 pm.
