More news about: Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Trailing for the first time this season early in the second quarter, the #12/14 Union College football team fired off 31 unanswered points to down visiting St. Lawrence University, 37-7, in Union's Liberty League home opener Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

In the win, Union improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in Liberty League play. The win, Union's 19th straight regular-season victory, matches the longest regular-season winning streak in program history, alongside the 19 straight games won in the 1992-94 seasons.

Today's game marked the first time this season that the Dutchmen did not recording touchdown, but senior William Bellamy still went 18-for-25 and 200 yards and spread the ball around to a season-high eight different targets. All four touchdowns were scored on the ground between first-year Jonathan Anderson and senior Ike Irabor. Sophomore Andrew Lau was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, all three coming in the first half, and 4-for-4 on extra points. The Dutchmen converted 7-of-7 on red-zone opportunities and are now 26-of-27 on the season.

Irabor finished the day with 123 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. The senior is one of three Dutchmen with six touchdowns this season, joining senior Andre Ross Jr. and first-year Robbie Tolbert for the team lead. Anderson, the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week, rushed for two touchdowns and 69 all-purpose yards.

The Dutchmen defense had a massive game in the trenches, limiting an opponent to single digits on the scoreboard for the second time this season. Opposing teams are averaging 13.83 points a game against Union. Junior Thomas Cavallo had a team-high five tackles, including two tackles for a loss, and two pass breakups.

Senior Cam Adams snagged an interception on the opening drive that resulted in Lau's first field goal of the game. Lau added a second 29-yard field goal with 2:05 remaining in the first quarter to put Union up 6-0. The Saints scored their only points of the day on a 1-yard rush at less than two minutes into the second quarter, going up 7-6 and putting Union behind for the first time this season.

The lead didn't last however, as Union marched 69 yards in 11 plays on the subsequent possession to take back the lead for good. Irabor finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown to cap the 5:31 drive and, after the defense forced a three and out, another long drive resulted in Lau's third field goal, a 23-yard kick through the uprights, that gave Union a 16-7 lead at halftime.

Irabor added his second touchdown of the day in the third quarter, with Anderson joining the mix less than eight minutes later. With 6:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, Anderson went on an 18-yard run for the final score of the game and sealing the 37-7 victory for the Dutchmen.

Union will enjoy the bye week before returning to action on Saturday, October 23, for their third Liberty League matchup of the year against Rochester. Kickoff is at 12:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
