DePauw Scores Early and Often in 57-7 NCAC Win over Hiram

More news about: DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the opening five minutes over Hiram after running just three offensive plays and came away with a 57-7 North Coast Athletic Conference and Old Gold Day win over the Terriers. DePauw improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC, while Hiram dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Danny Sheehan returned the opening kickoff for what appeared to be a DePauw touchdown, but a penalty negated it. However, the Tigers needed just one play to reach paydirt as Josh Major teamed with Trey Shaw on a 29-yard reverse pass to make it 7-0 just 20 seconds into the contest.

DePauw took over on its own 36 on its second possession and, after a rush for no gain on first down, Tigers quarterback Chase Andries connected with Jaylon Smith for a 64-yard score down the left sideline. Ethan Lowery stripped Hiram's Gabriel Hoskins near midfield and ran it in for a score and Liam Pooler also returned a fumble 25 yards for a score to push the Tigers' lead to 28-0 with 10:14 left in the opening stanza.

Nathan McCahill's 8-yard run later in the first extended the lead to 35-0.

Hiram's Tonvanta Revis picked off McCahill near the end of the first quarter and the Terriers converted it into their only score of the contest as Malcolm Rogers scored on a 1-yard run with 13:32 left in the second to cut the DePauw lead to 35-7.

Joe Sullivan booted a 38-yard field goal on the Tigers' next series before Gus Baumgartner scored on a 1-yard run with 3:08 left in the half to make it 45-7.

Sheehan's 8-yard scoring run on the Tigers' first possession of third quarter extended the lead to 52-7. Jack Drake tacked on a 21-yard field goal in the fourth and the Tigers recorded a safety midway through the fourth for the game's final points.

Andries, who was in the game for just three plays, completed his only pass for a 64-yard score. McCahill completed 15 of 21 for 134 yards. Major caught six passes for 65 yards to lead the Tigers, while McCahill paced the Tigers with 54 rushing yards.

Xavier Reyero completed 7 of 19 passes for 117 yards with five going to Raequan David-Hereford for 95 yards. Tommy Dees rushed for 16 yards to lead the Terriers.

Pooler and Joe Zanca each had five tackles with four of Zanca's going for losses totaling 12 yards including a 5-yard sack. Pooler also broke up three passes. Tommy Ryan had two interceptions and Joe Crossin one in the win.

Jabyron Webb led Hiram with 12 tackles with Isaiah Davilla picking up the only sack.

DePauw outgained Hiram, 384-158, including 144-17 on the ground.

The Tigers travel to Wittenberg on Saturday, October 9, for a 2 p.m. game.
