Olivet opens MIAA play with 33-10 win at Alma

ALMA, Mich. – The Olivet College football team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with a 33-10 win over Alma College this afternoon at Bahlke Field. With the win, the Comets stay perfect on the season at 4-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, the Scots missed a 42-yard field goal. Olivet gained possession at its 25-yard line. After picking 20 yards, sophomore Cortaveon Barnett rushed 55 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.
  • Alma made a 34-yard field goal on its next possession to trim its deficit to 7-3.
  • The Comets got the ball back at their own 15-yard line with 4:57 left until halftime. An 11-play scoring drive was capped off by a seven-yard touchdown pass from freshman Evan Ormsby to sophomore Josiah Ellison.
  • Olivet went ahead 17-3 when junior Samuel Roose converted a 29-yard field goal with 7:47 left in the third quarter.
  • The Comets extended its lead to 24-3 on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Ormsby and successful PAT kick by Roose.
  • Olivet added two more points to its total when senior Ta'Mar Heart-Wilkins tackled the Alma quarterback in the end zone for a safety.
  • After recovering a Comet fumble, Alma put seven points on the scoreboard when Trent Devereaux threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Goralski.
  • The Comets closed the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run by sophomore Jeremiah Sterling with 1:07 left in the game.

FOR THE COMETS

  • Olivet totaled 448 yards of offense compared to 110 yards for the Scots.
  • Barnett had eight carries for 85 yards.
  • Senior David Coffey had 11 rushes for 64 yards, all on the Comets' first drive of the second half.
  • Ormsby completed 14-of-24 passes for 190 yards.
  • Junior Jalen Broussard caught three passes for 62 yards.
  • Senior Andrew Campbell led the defense with six total tackles (five solo and one assisted).
  • Heart-Wilkins finished with five tackles, including 2.5 for minus 10 yards.

FOR THE OPPOSITION

  • Deveraux threw for 50 yards on 8-of-21 passing.
  • Devon Frenchko hauled in two passes for 19 yards.
  • Keegan Benkhardt tallied 11 carries for 38 yards.
  • Odin Soffredine and Austin Flowers each had 12 tackles.
