Fast Start for RPI lifts Engineers of Troy to Transit Trophy Win over WPI

WORCESTER -- Graduate student George Marinopoulos (Slingerlands, NY) threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns on 21-of-28 passing to power RPI over WPI, 24-10, to ruin homecoming for the Boynton Hillers and capture the Transit Trophy.

RPI continues its hot start on the season improving to 3-0, meanwhile WPI drops to 1-2. The Engineers of Troy won their 27th Transit Trophy, while the Boynton Hillers fall to 5-6 in the Transit Trophy game under the guidance of head coach Chris Robertson.

The Engineers of Troy amassed 366 yards of offense, including 104 yards rushing, led by senior Dylan Burnett (Hopewell Junction, NY) running for 79 yards on 21 carries.

It was an ominous start for the Crimson & Gray, as they fumbled the opening kickoff giving RPI first-and-10 from the WPI 35. Six plays later, Marinopoulos found fifth-year tight end Kenny Schrader (Pittsburgh, PA) for a four-yard touchdown.

With eight seconds left in the first half, senior Ethan Farrah (Grafton, MA) made a sliding catch on a 16-yard pass from classmate Brendan Olexa (Hatboro, PA) to give WPI its first points in over two quarters.

Farrah finished with 25 yards receiving on three catches, earning him the Robert Pritchard Offensive MVP Award. Olexa, meanwhile, threw for 109 yards on 13-of-24 passing.

Marinopoulos connected with junior Sterling Walker-Sutton (Stewartsville, NJ) on a nine-yard strike in the third quarter, before senior placekicker Conor MacDougall (Durham, NC) connected on a 25-yard field goal to mark the final scoring.

Senior linebacker Derrick Doncaster (Kingston, MA) made seven tackles, including 1-1/2 for loss, to lead the Crimson & Gray defense and earn himself the Robert Pritchard Defensive MVP Award.

Senior Maximilian Storch (Quincy, MA) had seven tackles and three pass breakups, and sophomore Jake Letourneau (Little Compton, RI) added seven stops and a pass breakup for WPI.

Junior Loren Diloreto (Valley Center, CA) punted seven times for 274 yards, an average of 39.1 per punt, and grad student Bryce Wade (Modesto, CA) made a 21-yard field goal for the Boynton Hillers.

Linebacker Austin Charles (Castaic, CA), a grad student, finished with seven tackles, while senior Joe Deptula (Watertown, CT) added six tackles, including an eight-yard sack, and senior defensive back C.J. Lyons (Rocky Mount, NC) had four stops for RPI.

WPI travels to New Jersey to face-off against Montclair State 2pm Saturday. Meanwhile, RPI hosts St. John Fisher at noon Saturday.
