Husson Football Drops Defensive Battle to UMass Dartmouth in First Home Game in 658 Days, 21-14

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University Eagles (0-1) fell to the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (1-0), 21-14, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference football action at Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. This game marked the first home game for the Eagles in 658 days.

FOR HUSSON:

  • Jordan Marcano carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards, while catching one pass for 18 yards.
  • Elijah Garnett also ran the ball 14 times for 45 yards.
  • Nic Visser completed 24-of-41 pass attempts for 281 yards with one touchdown pass and an interception.
  • Tyler Halls caught six passes for 87 yards.
  • Aidan Hogan recorded a career-high eight catches for 67 yards.
  • Anthony Walker had one catch for ten yards and a score.
  • Kaleb Caron record a team-high ten tackles (seven solo, three assists, and 1.5 for loss).
  • David Redmond added eight tackles (four solo, four assists, and two for loss).
  • Tucker Buzzell contributed seven tackles (three solo and four assists), with a 70-yard pick six. The 70-yard interception return was the longest by an Eagle in four years and the fifth longest school history.
  • Frank Curran had seven tackles (three solo, four assists, 3.0 for loss), while adding two sacks.

FOR UMASS DARTMOUTH:

  • Dante Aviles-Santos finished 9-of-20 for 128 yards with two touchdowns
  • Stephen Gacioch completed 6-of-13 pass attempts for 93 yards with one touchdown pass and an interception.
  • Luis Gonzales ran for 55 yards.
  • Marvens Jean carried the ball eight times for 42 yards.
  • DJ Machado caught four passes for 84 yards.
  • Antonio Brown had two catches for 54 yards and a score.
  • JP Mason recorded a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo, five assists, 0.5 for loss).
  • Javien Delgado finished the game with nine tackles (four solo, five assists, 3.0 for loss).

GAME REVIEW:

  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles scored the game's first touchdown on a 70-yard pick six by Buzzell with 13:36 remaining in the first half.
  • The Corsairs responded quickly with a 10-play, 67-yard drive that last for three minutes and 22 seconds to tie the game at seven when Gacioch completed a three yard touchdown pass to Mike Vincent at the 10:09 mark of the second stanza.
  • The game remained a 7-7 deadlock until Aviles-Santos found Diondre Ellis in the back of the endzone for a six yard touchdown pass, however the proceeding point after try was blocked, so the Corsairs only took a 13-7 lead with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter.
  • The Corsairs' lead only lasted until the 11:19 mark of the fourth when Visser threw a ten yard touchdown pass to Walker as the Eagles took back lead once again at 14-13 after Aaron Paradis PAT try was good.
  • A 9-play, 84-yard UMass Dartmouth drive that lasted over two minutes and 49 seconds put the Corsairs back up once again when Aviles-Santos completed a 39-yard pass to Brown.
  • The Eagles marched right back down the field on their proceeding possession looking for the game winning touchdown, but a Trell Best interception at the Corsairs' three yard line with nine seconds left to play sealed the 21-14 victory for the Corsairs.

TEAM STATS:

Husson and UMass Dartmouth combined to produce 668 yards of total offense in today's contest.

UP NEXT:

Husson returns to action on Saturday, September 11th when they trek down to Plymouth, N.H. take on the Panthers of Plymouth State University. This game will mark the first football game played on the newly opened Panther Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
