Offense Explodes in 40-7 Win Over McDaniel in Season Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University football team amassed over 500 yards in total offense en route to a 40-7 win over McDaniel in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium.

Playing in their first home game in the last 672 days, the Cardinals (1-0) snapped a two-game losing streak against the Green Terror and a three-game skid on opening day. Catholic also opened the 2016 season with a win over McDaniel at home, 28-21 in overtime on Sept. 3.

The Cardinals also scored the most points since Sept. 19, 2015 when they defeated Coast Guard at Cardinal Stadium, 40-24. Their 33-point margin of victory was also their largest since a 49-0 win over Anna Maria, also at home, on Sept. 28, 2013.

Meanwhile, sophomore Madden Lowe, who was making his first collegiate start, completed 41-of-55 passes for 433 yards and five touchdowns. He is the first Cardinal to throw for 400 yards since TJ Tutone had 400 in a 40-36 win over Washington & Lee on Nov. 8, 2014.

Lowe is also the first to throw five touchdowns in a game since Tutone had five against Guilford on Oct. 31, 2015.

Lowe completed a pass to 12 different receivers and was sacked just once in 55 attempts.

As a team, Catholic had 502 yards of total offense, its highest total since the team had 622 in a 37-35 win at Coast Guard on Sept. 17, 2016.

The Cardinals scored 40 unanswered points after McDaniel (0-1) took a 7-0 lead with 13:34 left in the second quarter.

After a punt, missed field goal and turnover on downs on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line, Catholic scored on each of its final six drives, the last three of which came off Green Terror turnovers.

Leading 37-7 with 14:39 remaining in the fourth, the Cardinals essentially ran out the clock with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that used over nine minutes and was capped by a 31-yard field goal from senior Fabrizio Reilly.

Defensively, Catholic limited McDaniel to just 206 yards of total offense while forcing three punts and one turnover on downs, totaling two interceptions and tallying a safety for the team's first points of the season. Seniors Liam Dearing, Dieter Kerat and Matthew DiSanto each had eight tackles. Kerat added 1.5 for loss.

The Cardinals travel to No. 17 Randolph-Macon next Saturday, Sept. 11. Kickoff from Day Field is at 1 p.m.
