NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It took Birmingham-Southern football 0:45 to march down field late in the fourth quarter and score the go ahead touchdown against Centre College at Lipscomb Academy Saturday afternoon. BSC (2-1) went ahead with 34 seconds left and held on for the 42-35 win. The victory keeps the Panthers hopes of a Southern Athletic Association east division championship alive.
Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) threw for 221 yards and a touchdown. His top targets were Branden Rew (Fayetteville, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) and Wells Smith (Jackson, Tenn./University of Jackson). Rew caught a game-high 103 yards, his longest at 40 yards. Smith finished with 101 receiving yards and a touchdown. Shufford led on the ground. Despite his 100-yard game streak ending, the senior finished with three touchdowns.
Defensively, Walter grabbed a game-high 10 tackles, nine solo. He also forced a fumble and had one tackle for a loss of one yard. Stevens finished right behind him with nine tackles, four solo, a forced fumble, and one tackle for a loss of two yards. DeArman, who finished with eight tackles, four solo, had a game-high four quarterback hurries, a sack, and 2.5 tackles for a loss of 22 yards.
Smith sent four punts for a total 171 yards, averaging 42.8 yards per punt and earning a game-best 66 yarder. Ford was a perfect 6-for-6 in extra points and kicked off for a total of 366 yards. He averaged 52.3 yards per kickoff.
The Panthers now wait to find out their fate for the SAA Championship.
