Benedictine Stops Lakeland

LISLE, IL - Scottie Bobeck intercepted a tipped pass in the endzone as the Benedictine University football team upended visiting Lakeland 34-26.

Benedictine received the opening kickoff and proceeded to march 75 yards down the field on eight plays. Joshua Williams set up the first touchdown with a 24-yard run. Tyler Jarnagin rolled in from a yard out to hand Benedictine a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first. Lakeland countered with a nine-play drive but had an extra point to tie the game blocked.

The second touchdown needed just two plays to complete. Alex Lopez snagged 59-yard touchdown pass following a 17-yard run from Ben Moore as Benedictine opened a 14-6 margin with 5:16 left in the quarter. The bust opening quarter continued with Lakeland utilizing an 11-play drive to have a chance to tie the game btu a two-point conversion was intercepted.

A short punt early in the second quarter gave Benedictine solid field position. Jaden West hauled in an 18-yard touchdown to extend the margin to 20-12 with 7:43 left in the half. A bad snap on a punt attempt late in the second allowed Lakeland to use a short field to tie the game with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Lakeland opened the second half by driving into Benedictine territory before stalling on a fourth down. Benedictine countered with an 11-play drive to stretch the lead to 27-20. Williams scampered in from 12 yards away to score his second touchdown of the day at the 6:46 mark of the third. The visitors drove down and had an attempt to tie but an extra point was blocked to make the score 27-26 with 2:40 remaining.

Lakeland attempted an onside kick by a recovery by Justin Fribbley put Benedictine in a solid spot to start the drive to ice the game. Moore caught a pass in the back of the endzone from Jarnagin early in the fourth to extend the lead to 34-26. Lakeland drove to the Benedictine five yardline but could not compete two pass attempts, turning the ball over on downs. After forcing a punt, Lakeland had one more go, but again could not convert deep on the Benedictine side as Bobeck dove to grab a tipped pass in the endzone on first down from the 12, ensuring the win.

The teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of offense with Benedictine racking up 503. The offense saw 337 yards through the air and 167 on the ground. Jarnagin completed 18-of-30 for 337 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Moore possessed 10 catches for an even 100 yards and added 16 on the ground. Lopez posted another big week with four catches for 150 yards. Williams gained 85 yards on the ground, carrying the ball 16 times. Bobeck was all over the field on defense, totaling 20 tackles. Michael Hawthorne broke up three passes. 

The win gave Benedictine (6-3, 5-1 NACC) an inside track on finishing second and marked the first win over Lakeland since 2014.
