WashU Forces Five Turnovers in Win Over Augie

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 2, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, in a 35-14 win over Augustana College (Ill.) Saturday in front of 2,238 fans at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis. 

WashU won its second-straight game to improve to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Augustana dropped to 4-4 and 3-4 in the CCIW.

Junior defensive back Will Hurley had a pair of interceptions in the win and also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. Hurley leads the team and is second in the CCIW in interceptions with four.

Senior quarterback Johnny Davidson was 20-of-28 for 225 yards and two TDs, and moved into second place all-time in school history in passing yards (6,832).

WashU picked off Augustana three times in the opening quarter, which led to a pair of touchdowns by the Bears. Junior running back Emmanuel Ebirim scored from a yard out with 12:47 left to make it 7-0 after the first interception by Hurley. 

Junior defensive back Andrew Whitaker picked up the Bears' third INT of the day which led to a 62-yard pass from Davidson to sophomore wide receiver Jared Harrison to make it 14-0 with 2:55 left in the first. 

Midway through the second, junior Keenan Bilyeu blocked a punt and then Hurley picked it up and scampered 28 yards for his second punt return TD of the season to make it 21-0 with 10:06 left before half.

Leading 21-7 in the third quarter, WashU executed a fake field goal as freshman kicker Chris Vartanian picked up the first down with an 11-yard run. Senior RB JohnFisher scored on the next play from three yards out to make it 28-7.

Senior defensive lineman Carter Rholl recorded the first interception of his career midway through the third which led to a 15-yard TD pass from Davidson to senior running back Emmanuel Engermann to push the lead to 35-7.

Augustana had the 340-320 advantage in total yards, as Harrison had a career-high six catches for 108 yards and a TD to lead WashU. Senior wide receiver Mitchel Groen added six catches for 58 yards. 

Senior linebacker Jeff Marek led the Bears' defensive unit with eight tackles, while junior defensive back JT Streepy added seven stops. Junior defensive linemen Peter Pigatti and Jack Schumacher each had four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

WashU hosts Millikin (4-4, 3-4 CCIW) on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. Prior to the game WashU will honor its 22 seniors.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Augustana 2-0 … The Bears have won 15-straight games against unranked opponents dating back to 2017.
