BROCKPORT, NY – The College at Brockport football team jumped out to a 20-0 lead over the course of the first 22:58 of the contest and never looked back as the Golden Eagles earned their sixth straight victory, 41-14, against Utica College at Bob Boozer Field on Saturday afternoon. Brockport nearly doubled the visitors in time of possession (39:54-20:06) and held the Pioneers to -2 rushing yards on the day as the Golden Eagles won their 19th consecutive Empire 8 Conference contest.
Brockport, which is receiving votes in the latest D3football.com National Poll, improved to 6-1 overall on the year and remained perfect at 3-0 in E8 play this season. The Golden Eagles will turn their attention now to arguably their toughest test of the season as they travel to nationally-ranked No. 19 Cortland next Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup. Cortland squeezed by host St. John Fisher, 42-37, on Saturday and improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Utica's record fell to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in league play after the loss at Brockport on Saturday.
Sophomore running back Jala Coad extended his league lead in rushing touchdowns as he punched in scores of one yard and seven yards on Saturday. His second rushing TD of the day was from seven yards out with just 1:52 remaining on the fourth quarter clock to close out the scoring on the day. He now has 11 total touchdowns this season, including 10 on the ground. He finished the day with 22 carries for 77 yards. Senior Justin Morrison added 14 carries for 72 yards and one score for the Golden Eagles.
Senior All-American candidate Alex West posted six tackles, three QB hurries, and added two more sacks to his 2019 resume. He now leads the Empire 8 with 7.5 sacks this season. West now has 24 career sacks and needs just two more to tie the program's career record of 26 set back in 2002 by Mike Condello.
DaQuan Hubbard and Imhotep Cromer each caught three balls for Brockport, while Alex Benson added two catches and a five yard touchdown run with 5:40 to go in the first quarter of play to put the home team on top 10-0. Hubbard now has 2,106 career receiving yards to his credit.
Brockport's secondary was busy all afternoon and Kenny Hernandez led the way with two interceptions and one pass break up. He returned his second pick of the day 42 yards for a score to help the Golden Eagles seal the victory with 10:00 to go in regulation. Hernandez now ranks second in the league with four INTs this season.
Alaan Montgomery also added his second interception of the season for Brockport and broke up two passes. Ben Marshall chipped in with four tackles and he also broke up two passes for the league's most stingy defense. The Golden Eagles are allowing an average of just 10.7 points per game this season, tops in the E8.
Senior kicker Dustin Moyle was on target all afternoon as he drilled first half field goals of 32 yards and 36 yards to help the Golden Eagles jump out to a 13-0 lead by the 10:30 marker of the second quarter. Moyle was also a perfect 5-for-5 on extra point opportunities to finish the day with 11 total points. He now has six total field goals this season.
Freshman quarterback Freddy June completed 10-of-15 passes for 121 yards before giving way to senior quarterback Jason Hellwig in the second half. Hellwig managed the second half well and completed 5-of-8 passes for 62 yards.
Brockport has now won four straight against the Pioneers and improved to 6-2 all-time against the central New York opponent. Over the course of the last four seasons Brockport is 23-3 in conference play.
Utica sophomore quarterback Logan Wilcox completed 11-of-26 passes for 98 yards and one TD pass to Peyton Miller at the 12:27 marker of the fourth quarter to make the score 27-14. Wilcox also threw two INTs. Ryan VanGalen also saw time under center for the Pioneers and he completed three passes for 114 yards, including a 45 TD pass to Keegan Wright to make the score 20-7 with 2:57 to go before the half. Kwasi Addo led the Utica defense with 14 tackles and one sack, while Antonio Scala added 12 tackles. Robbie Schempp was also a bright spot for the UC defense as he posted nine tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The Golden Eagles are 4-0 at Bob Boozer Field this season and they have now won 17 consecutive regular season home games.
