More news about: Whitworth

ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University turned two second quarter special teams mistakes by Whitworth University into a pair of touchdowns that were the difference in a 37-30 upset of the 10th-ranked Pirates on Saturday night at Chapman Stadium.

The Panthers improved to 2-0 with their first win over Whitworth since 2014.  The Pirates dropped to 1-1 with their first regular season loss since 2017.

Chapman took a 27-13 lead into halftime thanks to three second quarter touchdowns.  The first came after a fumbled punt was recovered at the Whitworth 14-yard line.  Two plays later Panther QB Jonston MacIntyre ran 14 yards for a touchdown to give Chapman a 13-7 lead.  After Whitworth tied the game 13-13 on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Leif Ericksen to Jerusalem To'oto'o, Chapman blocked a punt and recovered at the Pirates' eight yard line.  Three plays later MacIntyre ran in from eight yards out for a 20-13 lead.

Chapman was able to sustain its final drive of the second half, going 70 yards in eight plays.  Isaiah Woods ran for a touchdown from six yards out.

Both teams scored a first quarter touchdown.  Whitworth got on the board when Ericksen threw a five-yard touchdown to Taylor Kolste to cap the Pirates' second drive of the game.  Chapman answered when Reed Vettel threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Henshaw two possessions later.

Whitworth got within 27-20 late in the third quarter when Ericksen hooked up with Kolste again, this time from 12 yards away.  However, Chapman answered right back and scored on Tanner Mendoza's 34-yard run.

After the teams exchanged field goals in the fourth, Whitworth pulled back within a touchdown with 1:09 left.  Ericksen found Andrew Meredith over the middle for an 11-yard score.

Chapman recovered the onsides kick and ran out the clock.

The Panthers finished with a 440-414 edge in total offense, including a 230-31 advantage in rushing yards.  Chapman has run for 625 yards in its first two games of the season.

Ericksen completed 32 of 67 passes for 383 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.  Kolste caught nine passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Zach Hillman had seven tackles and an interception for Whitworth's defense.  Kale Wong also made seven stops and forced a fumble.

Vettel and MacIntyre split time at quarterback for Chapman.  Vettel completed 12 of 21 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.  MacIntyre was 3 of 11 for only 50 yards, but he ran for 75 yards and two scores, leading the Panthers' ground game.

Whitworth will return to action on October 5th when the Pirates host Willamette in the Northwest Conference opener and Homecoming weekend.
