McAllen's Second Quarter Scoring Outburst Sends Football Past Husson 31-12

More news about: WPI

Bangor, ME --- Sean McAllen (Prospect, CT) rushed for three second quarter touchdowns as WPI football closed out its non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a 31-12 road triumph at Husson.

The Engineers are now 3-0 for the first time since 2016 while the Eagles slip to 0-2 on the season.

Husson looked like they were going to score first when they intercepted a ball deep in WPI terriroity but fumbled themselves at the 12 yard line to give the ball back to the Crimson and Gray.  From there WPI went 84 yards on 15 plays capped by a 21-yard field goal by Bryce Wade (Modesto, CA) that accounted for all of the scoring in the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged to McAllen.  The senior registered touchdown scampers of 12, 2 and 2 yards on three consecutive drives to push the Engineers lead to 24-0.  The Eagles avoided being shutout in the first half when David Morrison (Ashland, MA) connected with Keyshaun Robinson (Brooklyn, NY) on a 26-yard strike just five seconds before intermission. The PAT was missed making the halftime score 24-6 in favor of the vistiors.

After a scoreless third quarter, Husson appeared to get back into the game when Morrison found Tyler Halls (Lisbon, ME) on 13-yard touchdown pass with 6:50 remaining.  The Engineers responded by grinding out a nine-play, 70 yard drive, finished by a four-yard touchdown plunge by Connor Field (Granby, CT) and a Wade PAT with 1:31 left to give the game it's final score of 31-12.

McAllen led all players with 84 yards on 21 carries.  His three scores now give him 228 career points, moving him past Mike Bucci (218 - 1986-89) for second all-time in school history behind Jason Wooley (338 - 1989-92). Field totaled 81 yards on 17 carries and quarterback Julian Nyland (Melrose, MA) added 53 rushing yards to go along with 13-of-20 passing for 203 yards.  Billy Mitchell (Groton, MA), Nic Rossi (Howell, NJ) and Clark Ewen (Arlington, MA) all had three receptions for 57, 51 and 48 yards respectively.

Nick Ostrowski (Charlton, MA) shared game-high tackles honors with 10 for the Engineers, including a stop-for-loss.  Steve Mey (Watertown, MA) added seven stops while Sam Casey (Winchester, MA) made six stops.  Max Storch (Quincy, MA) registered his first career interception while Brent Whitlock (Uxbridge, MA) recovered a fumble.

The strong WPI running game gave the Engineers a decided edge in time of possession (35:34 - 24:26) and advantage in total yards (420 - 318) and first downs (22 - 18).

WPI opens NEWMAC play next Saturday with a 3pm road contest at Springfield while Husson closes out its non-conference slate with a noon trip to SUNY Morrisville.
