BUFFALO, NY -- The College at Brockport football team posted 28 third quarter points and cruised to a 55-22 victory over host Buffalo State on Saturday to retain the I-90 Bowl Trophy for the fourth consecutive season. Freshman quarterback Freddy June rolled up 291 total yards and played a part in five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) as the Golden Eagle offense put together its top output of the young season.
The Golden Eagles, who are receiving votes in the latest D3football.com National Poll, have now won two straight and improved to 2-1 overall while Buffalo's record fell to 0-3 on the season. Brockport nearly produced three 100 yard rushers as they were led on the ground by senior Justin Morrison (102 yards), Freddy June (100 yards) and sophomore Jala Coad (98 yards).
The Brockport offense totaled 556 yards, including 365 on the ground, to go along with eight touchdowns (five rushing, three passing). The Golden Eagles were also efficient in the red zone, going 4-for-4 on chances inside the 20 yard line.
Brockport's receiving corps was efficient to say the least, as DaQuan Hubbard caught two balls for 106 yards, including an 88 yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. Imhotep Cromer got Brockport started on the right foot as both of his catches resulted in touchdowns in the second quarter.
Six different defenders totaled at least four tackles for Brockport. Freshman Raylens Boutin put together another stellar performance as he tied for the team lead with six tackles and he also added two pass breakups. Joel Atuahene totaled six tackles, including 1.5 TFLs, while Jason Karteron added six tackles and a sack. Kenny Hernandez and Alex West combined for 10 tackles. Hernandez added one interception and West picked up his first sack of the season. Andrew Covais tacked on three tackles and an interception.
Buffalo jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the contest, but the Golden Eagles responded quickly, scoring the next 20 points to take a 20-3 lead with 10:06 left in the half. Freddy June kicked off the Brockport scoring with a 25 yard touchdown run, the first of his young career. June then connected with Imhotep Cromer on two consecutive TD passes to push the Golden Eagle lead to 17 points. Cromer's touchdown receptions from Freddy June were 61 yards and two yards, just 3:23 apart.
Buffalo State answered with a touchdown of its own and set the score at 20-9 as the two teams took the locker room at the half.
Brockport's offense truly arrived in the third quarter, posting 28 points in the 15 minute stretch. June opened the second half with a 52 yard TD run to push Brockport's lead to 27-9 2:21 into the third quarter. Jala Coad then capped a two play, 40 yard drive with a seven yard TD run to make the score 34-9 with 10:32 left in the third. DaQuan Hubbard and June connected on an 88 yard TD pass with 9:22 to go in the stanza. Coad then found paydirt for the second time on the day to cap a seven play, 60 yard drive (TOP 3:23) to make the score 48-22 with 1:18 left in the third.
Brockport's defense kept the Bengals off the board in the final 15 minutes of action and senior Justin Morrison added an insurance touchdown as he scampered 24 yards for a score with 14 second remaining on the game clock to hand the Golden Eagles a 33 point victory.
Buffalo State quarterback Zak Ciezki completed 26 passes for 278 yards and added two TDs through the air, while Jordan Evert caught 11 balls for 157 yards and a score. Angel Tamarez added seven catches for 64 yards and a TD. Gino Bonagura led the Bengal defense with a game-high 11 tackles, one sack, one interception and two pass breakups.
Brockport heads back home on Sept. 28th when the Golden Eagles return to Bob Boozer Field for Homecoming & Family Weekend on campus. Brockport will host Alfred State for homecoming this year and the contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. On Oct. 5th the Golden Eagles will travel to St. John Fisher College for the annual Camp Good Days & Special Times Courage Bowl. The contest also marks the beginning of the Empire 8 Conference schedule and will begin at 6 p.m.
