SEWANEE, Tenn. – Birmingham-Southern football opened its Southern Athletic Association season with a 49-30 road win over The University of the South Saturday night. BSC (2-1, 1-0 SAA) is now 10-3 all-time against Sewanee.
The Panthers offense exploded for a program record seven touchdowns and 573 total yards, second most in program history.
Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) earned his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game. He went a game-high 194 yards while averaging 13.9 yards per carry, and earning two touchdowns. His longest of the day was 54 yards. Hunter Kountz (Jefferson City, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic HS) also finished with two rushing touchdowns.
Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) completed 13-of-16 passes for a team-high 229 yards with a touchdown. Branden Rew (Fayetteville, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) led the receiving corps. The sophomore caught five passes for a team-high 115 yards. And BSC's offensive line continued to dominate this week. They paved the way for 344 rushing yards and didn't allow a single sack.
The defense was paced by Trey Gory (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook HS). He earned seven tackles, three solo. In the secondary, DJ Albright (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton HS) collected five tackles, all solo, and a game-high two pass breakups.
Freshman kicker Aidan Hood (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) had a breakout game. He earned a game-high 386 kickoff yards, averaging 48.3 yards per kick. Tavion Fleming (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial HS) finished with 55 all-purpose yards in just two returns.
BSC returns to the Hilltop on Saturday, Sept. 28. They continue SAA action against Hendrix. It will be their Childhood Cancer Awareness game where the Panthers raise money for Children's of Alabama. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
