Berry Football Cruises to 34-9 Victory Over LaGrange

More news about: Berry

ROME, Ga. — The No. 16 Berry College football team likely didn't need extra motivation to win its fifth straight game against LaGrange College, but on a day honoring Kay Williams, a longtime donor, friend and fan, the Vikings delivered in the form of a 34-9 blowout of their in-state rival.

With the win, Berry improved to 2-0 on the year and won its 18th consecutive game on Williams Field at Valhalla. The team held a pregame ceremony honoring Kay's life and legacy, while also celebrating alongside her husband, Bob, and many of their close friends and family.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Vikings scored on their opening drive spanning nine plays and 65-yards. It was capped by a six-yard scramble from senior quarterback Heath Burchfield. Berry led 7-0.
  • LaGrange added a 29-yard field goal on their next drive but would not score again until late in the game when many of the Vikings starters watched from the sideline.
  • Mason Kinsey caught his first of two first-half touchdowns on the ensuing drive, snagging a one-yard pass from junior Jake Arceneaux in the back corner of the end zone. The Vikings led 14-3.
  • Kinsey then torched a LaGrange defender to score a 65-yard touchdown off a pass from freshman Gavin Gray. A 44-yard field goal from Trey Gregory gave the Vikings a healthy 24-3 lead at the half.
  • Garret Kinsey then scored his first touchdown as a Viking off a 13-yard pass from Burchfield. In another first, freshman kicker Matthew Syverson nailed a 32-yard field goal, the first of his career, before the end of the third quarter to give Berry a 34-3 lead.
  • LaGrange scored once more in the fourth to make the final score 34-9.
  • Berry held the Panthers to just 43 yards on the ground and tied a program record with nine sacks. The Vikings collected 397 yards of total offense.
