More news about: Brockport

Geneva, NY -- The nationally-ranked No. 13 Brockport football team lost its season opener on the road at Hobart College 33-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Brockport (0-1), which dropped its first regular season contest since 2016, returns to the friendly confines of Bob Boozer Field next Saturday for a rematch of last season's NCAA Division III Championship first round contest against Framingham State. Kickoff for the Golden Eagles home opener is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Brockport sophomore running back Jala Coad carried the ball 15 times for 37 yards and also caught four passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback Jason Hellwig completed 16-of-32 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown, while classmate Joseph Ortiz caught eight balls for 85 yards.

Ortiz eclipsed 2,000 yards for his career and now needs just seven more catches to tie the school-record.  He currently has 213 career catches and 2,060 career receiving yards. DaQuan Hubbard caught three balls for 82 yards, including a 39 yard leaping reception over the top of a Hobart defender.  Hubbard now has 82 career catches for 1,831 yards and 17 touchdowns.  He is eight TD catches shy of the College's career record.

Brockport's lone touchdown of the day knotted the score at 7-7 in the first quarter as Hellwig connected with Coad on a seven yard TD pass to cap a 12 play, 75 yard scoring drive.

Hobart posted 26 unanswered points on its way to the victory.  The Statemen broke the 7-7 tie when Collin Urie picked off a pass and returned it 23 yards for a score to hand the home team a seven point lead.

Jake Catalioto caught the second of four touchdown passes from Hobart QB Ryan Hoffman with 2:34 left in the first half to push the Statesman lead 13 points, 20-7, as the halftime horn sounded.

Hobart added two more scores in the second half to earn the 26 point victory.

Raylens Boutin and Jason Karteron each posted five tackles.  Karteron also picked off a pass for the Golden Eagles defense.  Lawrence Jenkins totaled four tackles, including a team-best 3.0 tackles for a loss of 10 yards. Preseason All-American Alex West added four tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss.

Hobart quarterback Ryan Hoffman completed 12 passes for 147 yards and four touchdowns through the air.  Jake Catalioto caught five balls for 74 yards and two touchdowns, including a 58 yard TD catch in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Statesmen.
