SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee football began its 125th season of football on Historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium with a 47-7 loss to Southwestern (Texas) from the American Southwest Conference Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Southwestern scored on its two possessions of the game. The first score was a, four-yard rush by the quarterback Austin Emery, and then a 66-yard touchdown pass to David Brandenburg from Emery saw the score at 14-0 with 6:21 left in the opening quarter.
-The visitors made it a 20-0 lead at the break, but the Tigers had an opportunity to break the shutout. Near the end of the half, Brody Palmer missed a 47-yard field goal attempt.
-Southwestern pushed the lead to 40-0 before Sewanee saw the endzone for the first time in 2019. At the 14:29 mark in the fourth quarter, Colin May found Alex Darras' 24-yard pass. Prior to the strike, Southwestern fumbled the ball at the Pirates 24-yard-line recovered by Jack Lambert.
-For the game, the running game belonged to the Pirates, out-rushing the Tigers, 331-22 and out-gaining the home team, 520-195.
SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Alex Darras threw for 164 yards on 17-of-33 passing with one touchdown.
-Micah Maes led all receivers with 58 yards, while Cyrus McCullough recorded 104 yards in kickoff returns.
-On defense, freshman Alex Coffield posted a game-high 14 tackles, 1.5 for loss, while William Phillips, Walker Weatherly and Pierce Johnson added 11, 10 and 10 tackles each.
-Emmanuel Adesanya posted two sacks, totaling 12 yards for a loss, while Evan Gaunt had 1.5 tackles for a loss for nine yards.
SOUTHWESTERN KEY STATISTICS
-Austin Emery threw for 152 yards and ran for 61 yards responsible for five touchdowns.
-David Brandenburg had 88 yards through the air for a score.

Sewanee will hit the road for the first time in 2019 with a trip to Lexington, Va. to square off with Washington & Lee next Saturday.
