Pacific Football Loses Season Opener to Chapman, 45-14

Senior Kobe Williams had his 10th career game with over 100 yards receiving in a 45-14 loss in the season opener for the Pacific University football team to Chapman.

The Las Vegas, Nevada caught his fourth career pass over 70 yards late in the first quarter that put the Boxers ahead 14-7 with 4:24 left in the first quarter before the visitors from Orange, California scored the next 38 points en route to the game. Williams finished the game with a game-high six catches for a game-high 173 yards in the loss.

 

Chapman (1-0) got on the scoreboard on its first drive of the season, going six plays for 70 yards. In the drive, Panthers' quarterback Jonston McIntyre overcame two incomplete passes to start the drive before finding Trevor Vill for a touchdown on third down.

 

Pacific tied the game at 7 when junior defensive tackle Braden Baker forced and ran back a fumble 20 yards for a game-tying touchdown with 7:31 left in the opening quarter. The fumble return for a touchdown by Baker is the first Boxer to return a fumble for a touchdown since Cole Thomas returned a George Fox fumble 52 yards for a touchdown against the Bruins on September 29, 2018.

 

With the game tied at 7, Pacific took its first lead of the season when first-time starter and sophomore quarterback Nick Bower found a speedy Williams for a 71-yard touchdown strike with 4:24 left in the opening quarter.

 

The Panthers got back on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when running back Isaiah Woods broke free for a 43-yard touchdown. Chapman missed the extra point, putting the visitors behind 14-13 with 11:19 left in the opening half.

 

Chapman scored on its next two drives, capitalizing on a Pacific turnover to regain the lead for the remainder of the contest.

 

The Panthers went on to outgain the Boxers by a 590 to 296 margin in the win. Woods finished the game with 13 rushes for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead Chapman. MacIntyre and Reed Vettel combined to complete 15 of 26 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively for Pacific, sophomore linebacker Gage Quinabo-Reis had a team-best 11 tackles. For Chapman, Dillon Keefe had six tackles including two sacks and three tackles for loss to go along with a forced fumble.

 

Pacific will look to bounce back with its next contest as they travel to the University of Dubuque on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (PST) and 7 p.m. (CST) in Iowa.
