FROSTBURG, Md. – No. 14 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays scored 29 points in the third quarter to pull away from sixth-ranked Frostburg for a 58-27 win in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Playoffs, Saturday at an icy and chilly Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats close their 2018 campaign with the season's only loss at 10-1 overall, while JHU advances to the round of eight with an 11-1 overall slate. Hopkins will now play RPI (10-1) next Saturday in the national quarterfinals.

Senior Jamaal Morant ran for a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and senior quarterback Connor Cox hit sophomore Terrell Brown for a 24-yard touchdown pass with just 48 seconds left in the second quarter as Frostburg assumed a 20-19 lead at intermission.

However, the third quarter belonged to the Blue Jays as they scored four touchdowns and jumped out to a 48-20 lead with only the fourth quarter to play.

Hopkins quarterback David Tammaro threw two TD passes and ran for another during the decisive third period.

Cox completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Christian Thornton to open the fourth and narrow the deficit to 48-27.

JHU sealed the win when Tyler Messinger ran for a four-yard score with 5:37 left in regulation and Mike Eberle connected on a 39-yard FG with less than a minute to play.

FSU finished the afternoon with 480 yards in offense, but the Bobcats surrendered 647 yards, including 400 on the ground to the Jays.

Morant ran for 92 yards and a score for Frostburg, while Cox finished with 355 yards through the air with two touchdowns. Senior wideout Sergio Andino caught seven passes for 124 yards to lead all receivers.

Messinger powered the Johns Hopkins ground game as he ran for 231 yards on 16 carries and four scores. Tammaro completed 17-of-24 passes with 247 yards and three TDs.

Defensively, sophomore Avery Thurman posted 11 tackles, while first-year Trevor Craig added 10.

Frostburg, which is expecting join the NCAA Division II ranks in 2019-20, ends its tenure in Division III with 31 wins over the final three seasons, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA playoffs.

Frostburg's four-year seniors capped their careers as the winningest group in program history with 37 victories.

Cox entered Saturday ranked eighth in the nation among active QBs with 84 TD passes and he finished his career as one of just 10 quarterbacks active at the DIII level with over 4,000 yards passing and at least 1,000 yards rushing.
