KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College football team lost its season finale 48-18 to No. 12/13 Trine University on Senior Day.
The Hornets recovered a Trine fumble near midfield on the opening possession and scored a touchdown three plays later on Zach VanFaussien's 20-yard run to give the Hornets an early 6-0 lead.
Trine scored on its next possession and added another touchdown later in the quarter to go up 14-6.
Kalamazoo scored early in the second quarter when VanFaussien connected with Dylan Padget for 24 yards to make it a 14-12 game.
Trine answered with another touchdown to go up 21-12, a lead the Thunder would take into halftime.
Trine pulled ahead 28-12 early in the third, but Kalamazoo made it a 10-point game (28-18) again when Anthony Giovanni scored on a 3-yard pass from VanFaussien with 5:52 left in the third.
The score remained 28-18 early in the fourth before Trine scored three unanswered touchdowns to secure the win and an undefeated regular season.
Zach VanFaussien finished 16-of-35 passing for 160 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Sam Matthews led the Hornet receivers with five catches for 62 yards. Anthony Giovanni had five catches for 56 yards. Dylan Padget finished with 50 yards on four catches.
Raekwon Castelow led the Hornets in rushing with 36 yards on 13 carries.
Jake Osen led the Kalamazoo defense with nine total tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Matt Ford had eight tackles while Jacob Chantres finished with six, including two for lost yardage.
Dominic Moore and Nate Micallef were each credited with a sack in the game.
Kalamazoo finished the season 7-3 overall, the program's most wins since 1962. The Hornets tied for third place in the MIAA with a 4-3 league record.
