Colonels hang 56 on Panthers in impressive regular season finale

More news about: Centre

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Centre football put a punctuation mark on the end of their regular season, drubbing Birmingham-Southern by a 56-20 margin at Krulak Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels advance to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the Southern Athletic Association, and with Berry's loss at Trinity today will claim a share of the conference championship. The Panthers close 2018 with a 6-4 record overall (4-4 SAA).

Senior quarterback Tanner Young tossed five touchdowns in the win, setting the program single-season record.

HIGHLIGHTS

- After trading empty possessions, the Colonels opened the scoring on an 83-yard touchdown pass from Young to Birmingham native Thomas Jordan.

- With the Panthers in the red zone soon after, John Wilson picked off BSC's Trevor Oakes and took it 84 yards for a pick-six.

- Birmingham-Southern would score in the second quarter, but missed the PAT to make it 14-6.

- A 45-yard scamper from Colin Burnam helped set up another touchdown drive from the Colonels, capped by a one-yard plunge from Trevor Carnell.

- Following a big 11-yard sack from Ryan Smith, Centre's offense took over and scored its third straight TD when Young hit Davis Kannapell.

- The Panthers would find the endzone just before the half, making it a 35-13 Centre advantage at the break.

- Birmingham-Southern looked poised to score after receiving the ball to open the third quarter, but Er'ron Mitchell blocked its field goal attempt and recovered for the Colonels.

- Young quickly hit Jordan Gunter for a Centre score, and later found Hibbs for a touchdown that made it 49-13 after the PAT.

- Resreve running back Patric Edwards took a rush up the middle for a 22-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Ben Logsdon's point after gave Centre a season-high 55 points.

- The Panthers added a late score on Centre's second string defense.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Centre amassed 448 yards in a balanced offensive attack, gaining 226 through the air and 222 on the ground.

- Young completed a season-low 11 passes, but still managed a career-best five touchdowns to four different receivers. His 29 passing TDs is one more than Brian Behrendt threw in 2004 and former teammate Devin Hayes tossed in both 2016 and '17.

- All but two of Centre's touchdown drives lasted less two minutes. The longest drive consumed only 3:56 of game time and went seven plays.

- Eric Smith racked up a team-high eight tackles (six solo), including a sack, and was followed by Nate Johnson and Alec Fontaine with seven each. Fontaine also recorded 1.5 TFL and four pass breakups.

- Logsdon was a perfect 8-for-8 on PATs.
