Seniors shine in 49-20 home finale victory over Sewanee

More news about: Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre football had plenty to celebrate on Senior Day Saturday, handing visiting Sewanee a lopsided 49-20 defeat at Farris Stadium in the regular season home finale.

The Colonels improve to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Athletic Association, having won five in a row while outscoring their opponents 210-95 during that stretch. The Tigers finish their season 4-6 overall and 3-5 in the SAA.

Prior to kick-off, Centre celebrated the careers of its 27 senior student-athletes. The class had a big day on the field, including standout performances from Colin Burnam (157 rushing yards, 3 TDs), Trevor Carnell (116 rushing yards, TD), Tanner Young (256 passing yards, 3 TDs) and Jaylon Hibbs (119 receiving yards, TD).

HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre's defense set the tone with a 3-and-out on Sewanee's first possession, and Burnam followed by carrying the ball five times on a five-play, 41-yard touchdown drive to put the home side ahead, 7-0.
- Carnell took over the scoring duties later in the quarter, rushing for a 13-yard score to make it 14-3 after the opening period.
- The visiting Tigers made things interesting with a field goal and touchdown on consecutive drives to pull within 14-13, but it was as close as they would be the rest of the afternoon.
- Young's first passing touchdown came on the ensuing Centre possession, as he found Mack Coxin the corner of the endzone after rolling out of the pocket.
- The senior signal caller found classmate Cody Estep on a 25-yard touchdown near the end of the quarter to give Centre a 28-13 halftime lead.
- Burnam hit paydirt again on the Colonels' second drive of the third quarter, which was kept alive in part due to Carnell's big 21-yard run on 4th and 10.
- In his final regular season home game, Burnam set a personal-best with a third rushing score early in the fourth quarter, putting Centre up 42-13 after the extra point.
- The outcome all but decided, Hibbs hauled in a record-setting 23-yard touchdown pass from Young midway through the fourth quarter. His 11 receiving scores this year are most in single-season program history.
- Sewanee, which was forced to punt on five consecutive drives across the second, third and fourth quarters, would add a late touchdown.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre amassed season highs in total yards (539) and rushing yards (239), averaging nearly six yards per carry. Burnam and Carnell combined for 273 yards.
- Young completed 16 of 28 passes for 256 yards and three scores, continuing his streak of multiple touchdowns thrown in each game this season.
- Hibbs becomes the first Colonel to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards since Max Mazza in 2014.
Jaylen Jones and senior Alec Fontaine led Centre with seven tackles apiece, while Tommy KaczochaZach BergerRyan Smith and Austin Mitchell each had six.
David Schill picked off a Micah Maes pass late in the victory for his first career interception.
