Johns Hopkins Wins Seventh Straight, Tops Juniata, 56-0

More news about: Johns Hopkins

HUNTINGDON, PA – Johns Hopkins junior quarterback David Tammaro was 18-of-22 for 311 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for a touchdown in just one half of play to lead the 18th-ranked Blue Jays past Juniata, 56-0, Saturday afternoon at Knox Stadium.  The win is the seventh straight for Johns Hopkins, which improves to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Johns Hopkins can clinch at least a share of its 10th straight Centennial Conference title with a win in the regular-season finale next Saturday against McDaniel.  The Blue Jays would also land the league's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Playoffs with a victory.

While the Blue Jay offense was busy rolling up 692 yards on an average of 10 yards per play, the Blue Jay defense was equally impressive.  Johns Hopkins held Juniata to 151 yards of total offense, including just 23 on 31 rushing attempts, totaled six sacks, limited the Eagles to a 3-of-16 showing on third downs and forced 11 punts on 12 JC possessions.  The 11 punts came on Juniata's first 11 possessions; the Eagles turned the ball over on downs on their 12th and final possession of the game.

Tammaro led the Blue Jays on first-half scoring drives that covered 79, 48, 71, 80 and 58 yards as Johns Hopkins rolled up 354 yards before halftime.  None of the scoring drives took more than 3:20 or nine plays and two drives took less than a minute.

Tammaro capped the Blue Jays' first two drives with a 24-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Ryan Hubley and a 48-yard strike to freshman Harrison Wellmann.  The pass to Hubley capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive on JHU's first possession, while he found Wellmann all alone behind the secondary on the first play of JHU's second possession to give the Blue Jays a quick 14-0 lead.

The 14-0 lead was 21-0 just one play into the second quarter as Hubley added his second touchdown reception – this one from 17 yards out – to give the Blue Jays the 21-point lead.  Tammaro's second touchdown pass to Hubley was the 50th of his career.

Hopkins tacked on two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the half to push the lead to 35-0 at intermission.  Tammaro notched the 10th rushing touchdown of his career to polish off a nine-play, 80-yard drive with 4:59 left in the first half and then connected with senior Luke McFadden on a 17-yard scoring pass with 2:07 on the clock to account for the 35-point halftime lead.  McFadden made a SportsCenter-worthy 44-yard catch one play before his touchdown reception.

Juniata never seriously threatened in the second half and the Blue Jays added a three-yard touchdown run by Luke Yakely, a 31-yard Patrick Hensley touchdown reception and a 21-yard Aivory Foster scoring run to account for the final scoring.

Tammaro's 311 yards were part of a 539-yard passing day for the Blue Jays, who got an 11-of-15 performance for 234 yards and one touchdown from sophomore Nick Leongas to complement Tammaro's effort.  Foster paced the Blue Jays with 65 yards rushing and the one touchdown, while McFadden had a game-high five receptions for 83 yards and one score.  In all, 14 different players had at least one reception and eight had at least 40 receiving yards for the Blue Jays.

Kyle Roberts was in on four tackles for Johns Hopkins, including three for losses and one sack.  Freshman Nick Seidel posted a team-high five tackles for Johns Hopkins, which totaled 11 tackles for losses in the victory.

Tyler Clark and Jason Jones combined to go 13-of-24 for 128 yards for the Eagles.  Shaheed Ross and Daulton Snyder both had four receptions and Ian Border rushed for a team-high 30 yards on 13 carries.  Adam Grajewski had a team-high nine tackles for Juniata.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, November 10 when the Blue Jays welcome McDaniel to Homewood Field for the final regular season game of the year (12 pm).  The Blue Jays will honor their seniors prior to the game.

Notes:  Johns Hopkins has allowed just 65 points during its seven-game winning streak • The 692 total yards and 539 passing yards are the second-highest totals in school history • The Blue Jays have seven games with 600+ yards of total offense in the last 20 games – there were only six, 600-yard games in school history prior to the last 20 games • Tammaro is the fourth Johns Hopkins quarterback to reach 50 career touchdown passes and his four today push him past current head coach Jim Margraff into third place on JHU's career list – Margraff had 50 touchdown passes during his career from 1978-81.
