Frostburg Drops Southern Virginia On Homecoming

More news about: Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior quarterback Connor Cox accounted for six touchdowns to push the sixth-ranked Frostburg State football team to an impressive 61-7 win over Southern Virginia on Homecoming, Saturday.

The Bobcats remain undefeated at 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in the league with their second-straight high scoring affair at home. FSU is now 7-0 for the first time since 1994 and pushed its winning streak to 24 games when scoring first.

Two weeks ago, Frostburg shutout William Paterson to the tune of 56-0 for the largest shutout in school history and on Saturday, Frostburg nearly posted a 61-0 blanking of the visiting Southern Virginia Knights (2-6, 1-6). The visitors used a touchdown with 6:33 left in the fourth to avoid a zero on the scoreboard.

Cox threw for 201 yards and five touchdowns and ran one in from four yards out for the opening TD of the second half. His five passing TDs tie him for the second most in a single game in program history.

Frostburg scored nine touchdowns on 14 possessions, while the Bobcat defense allowed the Knights into FSU territory just four times. Frostburg's defense held SVU to less than 10 offensive yards on 11 of 14 drives and the visitors punted the ball eight times, fumbled twice and threw one interception.

Cox tossed a pass to nine different receivers, including two touchdowns to Malik Morris, who finished with 104 yards on four receptions. The duo opened the afternoon with a five-yard scoring pass for a quick 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.

Cox also tossed touchdowns to sophomore Terrell Brown, senior Noah Teeter and sophomore Chandler Breeden. Senior Jamaal Morant finished the afternoon with 58 rushing yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Aizsha Horne ran for 50 yards and another score. Horne's rushing score capped the afternoon for Frostburg and pushed the lead to 61-0 with 11:46 left in the fourth.

The Bobcats finished the afternoon with 434 yards in offense on 69 plays with 22 first downs. On the flip side, FSU limited Southern Virginia to 127 yards on 52 plays and just nine first downs. The Knights also punted the ball eight times for 231 yards and completed just three passes for eight yards.

The Bobcat defense also found the endzone as junior linebacker Wayne Palmer picked off a pass and returned it 68 yards up the home sideline for the score and a 28-0 cushion with 9:14 showing on the second quarter clock.

Frostburg entered the afternoon ranked 14th in the nation in turnover margin and the Bobcats collected three more against the Knights.

In three home games this season, Frostburg is averaging over 50 points per game and nearly 413 yards per game in offense. Defensively, FSU has allowed just two touchdowns and is holding opponents to 127 yards in offense.

Seven different players registered five tackles, including Paler, first-year Nate Imes, first-year Diron Accoo, senior Dre'Quan Reed, first-year Trevor Craig, senior Boakum Vital and junior Paul Kumpar.

Frostburg returns to action next Saturday at Kean at 1:00 pm.

Notes: The win pushes Frostburg's record to 5-1 against the Knights … Frostburg is now 15-2 in its last 17 homes games … FSU is 5-0 under coach DeLane Fitzgerald on Homecoming … Palmer's interception is the fourth-longest in program history.
