More news about: William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-7, 0-6 NJAC) made it a one-possession game in the third quarter, but visiting Christopher Newport (4-2, 3-2 NJAC) was able to pull away in the fourth for a 39-10 win Oct. 20.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pioneers turned a Captain fumble into a 3-0 first-quarter lead when freshman William Oertel, Jr. kicked a 34-yard field goal with 3:43 on the clock.
  • That lead held up until the 9:42 mark of the second period when junior quarterback Jack Anderson found senior Joshua Davis for a 17-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion pass to sophomore Sean Wilkinson was successful, and the Captains owned an 8-3 edge.
  • Senior defensive back B.J. Hill returned an interception 27 yards for a TD, making it a 15-3 CNU advantage 6:44 before halftime.
  • Sophomore Ben Garbarini kicked a 44-yard field goal with 0:24 on the clock, allowing Christopher Newport to take an 18-3 lead into the locker room.
  • Sophomore Siraj Abdul-Malik got a piece of Garbarini's punt, giving WP the ball at the CNU-37 early in the second half. Junior quarterback Cornelius Kinchen flipped the ball backwards to senior wide receiver Kyle Fanning, and he lofted a pass to junior RaeQuawn Bridgeman. The trick play worked for a 37-yard touchdown and an 18-10 score at the 11:03 mark.
  • The Captains opened the fourth quarter with a Brock Carnes two-yard scoring run (25-10, 11:36), and he added a seven-yard TD carry after a fumbled kickoff return (32-10, 11:17).
  • Christopher Newport turned an interception into seven points when freshman C.J. Donaldson rushed for nine yards, making it a 39-10 game with 5:14 remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Kinchen finished 11-for-27 for 74 yards and four interceptions.
  • Freshman running back Kobe Roberts carried 10 times for 15 yards. Bridgeman caught four passes for 57 yards and a score.
