Spartans Football Open with Loss to #12 Warhawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque kicked off their 2018 season on Saturday night under the lights of Chalmers Field against #12 UW-Whitewater. The top-ranked Warhawks defense would hold the Spartans scoreless in the final three quarters en route to a 38-6 victory.

UD would finish the evening with 186 yards of offense against a defense which returned 10 starters from a year ago. Dwayne Allen Jr. led the Spartans with 66 yards on the ground in 23 rushes. Sean Duffy finished 16-32 in passing for 100 yards and one touchdown. His two favorite targets were Emanuel Jenkins who caught six passes for 51 yards including a 10 yard touchdown grab and Kody Riemer who grabbed six passes for 20 yards. 

Possession time was about equal with UW-Whitewater holding a slim margin 30:33 to UD's 29:27. THe Warhawks were able to convert 10-17 third downs while the Spartans were 7-17. Doug Gates led the defense qith seven tackles  inlcuidng a sack and two tackles for losses. Dalton Knaack, Jacob Owens, Blaze Barista, and Logan Benter would all finish with six tackles each.

Freshman punter Andy Vujnovich punted seven times for 227 yards with his longest being a 43 yard kick and placed one inside the 20 yard line. Tyler Sheffield had two kicks for 118 yards for a 59.0 average.

The Spartans (0-1) travel across the country to face Pacific University (0-1) next week in Forest Grove, Ore., with a 7 p.m. (PST) kick-off. The Boxers lost on Saturday to Chapman University by a 6-36 score.
