Boxers Fall in Season Opener to Chapman, 36-6

On the strength of a 272-yard advantage in total offense and an early 21-0 lead led defending SCIAC champion Chapman to a 36-6 win over Pacific University on Saturday night in Orange, California.

The Boxers (0-1) traveled to the Golden State with a young squad that had eight first-time starters for the season opener.

The Panthers (1-0) were led by quarterback Ian Fieber, who completed 21 of 29 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns in the win. His favorite targets were Trevor Vill and Dominic Vaccher, who each hauled in eight passes and two touchdowns. Vill had 174 yards receiving and Vaccher added 117 in the win.

The passing trio connected on three early touchdowns for the early lead and went into the halftime break with a 21-0 lead. The Boxers got on the scoreboard after the defense forced its first turnover of the season. Pacific senior defensive tackle Bobby Ulrich sacked Fieber and forced a fumble. Junior Vinny Le landed on the ball at 31-yard drive. Pacific quickly answered when J.T. Greenough found Hayden Von Almen for his first reception and touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-6.

Chapman answered the Pacific score with its fourth touchdown on the night as Fieber connected with Vill for his second touchdown of the night to stretch the lead to 27-6. The Panthers scored another touchdown in the early minutes of the 4th quarter and added a safety later in the quarter for the final margin.

Ulrich had 2.5 tackles for loss as the Boxers racked up nine tackles for loss in the contest. Greenough and backup quarterback Bret Yap, Jr. managed to spread 20 receptions among seven-different players. Kainalu Reyes-Hackney and Ty Hargis were the top receivers with five receptions each to lead the Boxers.
