Frostburg Runs Away From Stevenson In Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Eighth-ranked Frostburg rushed for four touchdowns on the evening in a dominating 34-7 win over Stevenson in the opener for both schools, Thursday.

The Bobcats (1-0) rushed for 176 yards on the night and found the end zone three times in the first half. FSU ran for one more score in the second half and sophomore kicker Jeremy Harrison added two fourth quarter field goals.

In total, the Bobcats amassed 430 yards in total offense and averaged over seven yards per play. The FSU defense limited Stevenson to just 268 yards in offense despite the hosts holding onto the ball for over 33 minutes.

Thursday night's win marks the fifth-straight season that Frostburg has won its opener and all five of those victories have come in coach DeLane Fitzgerald's five seasons at the helm. Frostburg has also won its last 10 night games.

The 34-7 final almost matched last year's score when the Bobcats opened the season with a 33-7 victory over the Mustangs at Bobcat Stadium.

Senior Jamaal Morant ran for two of Frostburg's four touchdowns and he finished with 54 yards on 16 carries. Senior quarterback Connor Cox threw for 254 yards on 8-of-15 passing, including a 92 yarder to junior Malik Morris that setup the game's first score. It is Frostburg's first pass play for over 90 yards since the 2002 season. Morris finished with 149 yards on three catches.

Morant opened the evening with a five-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter that capped a 98-yard four-play drive for Frostburg. On third and nine from the FSU three, Cox tossed a deep ball to Morris who made a leaping catch before racing to the Stevenson five.

Sophomore Malcolm Facey pushed his way into the end zone on the Bobcats' first drive of the second quarter for a 14-0 lead. Senior Grayson Boyce made it 21-0 when he scored from three yards out on FSU's ensuing possession.

The Mustangs (0-1) scored their only touchdown of the ballgame with 21 seconds left in the first half that capped a 14-play, 75-yard drive. Dan Williams ran in from three yards out that cut Frostburg's deficit to 21-7 at the break.

Morant scored FSU's fourth touchdown late in the third when he scored from three yards out. His touchdown capped another 90+ yard drive for the Bobcats as they marched 96 yards on 12 plays.

Harrison closed the evening with two field goals in the fourth. The first was a 23 yarder at 11:31 and the second was a 22 yarder with 7:45 to play.

Sophomore Avery Thurman led the Bobcat defense with eight tackles, while senior Wayne Palmer contributed seven stops. Sophomore Erik Davenport led the way with 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack. Frostburg finished with 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.
