Frostburg Takes Regents Cup Title In 2OT

More news about: Frostburg State

SALISBURY, Md. – The Frostburg junior tandem of Connor Cox and Christian DiPaola connected on a 27-yard touchdown in the second overtime period to carry the 15th-ranked Bobcats to a 14-7 win over in-state rival Salisbury in the 19th Annual Regents Cup, Saturday.

The win caps Frostburg's regular season at 9-1 overall and 8-1 in the NJAC and hands it the Regents Cup trophy for the second-consecutive year.

Frostburg, which entered the afternoon as the NJAC leader in scoring (37.3), needed just 14 points for its fifth-consecutive win.

Cox tossed his first touchdown of the afternoon to junior wideout Sergio Andino in the second quarter. The ball was tipped on its way to Andino, who made a diving, one-handed snag for a 21-yard score and a 7-0 lead with 9:08 left in the half.

Salisbury answered early in the fourth to send things to overtime when Malique Pratt scampered 47 yards for a touchdown with 12:00 left in regulation.

Neither team put up points in the first overtime and in the second, Cox found DiPaola as the Bobcats led 14-7.

Frostburg's defense stepped up on SU's ensuing possession as senior Shawn Magginson forced a fumble on second down and it was recovered by senior Aaron Gibson to seal the win.

The Bobcats limited the Sea Gulls to just 245 yards rushing and 272 yards in total offense. Salisbury entered the matchup as the ninth-best rushing attack in the nation (295.4) and third in the league in scoring (31.8). Frostburg forced SU to punt six times and forced a turnover on both of the Gulls possessions in overtime.

On offense, the Bobcats posted 338 yards behind 150 on the ground and 188 in the air.

Junior tailback Jamaal Morant ran for 100 yards for the second time this season as he rushed for 101 on 19 carries.

Cox was named the Mike McGlinchey MVP for Frostburg after throwing for two scores on 15-of-29 completions and 184 yards.

Andino's scoring reception marks the sixth-consecutive game in which he has hauled in a touchdown. He finished the afternoon with four catches for 38 yards and one score.

Junior Josh Scales led Frostburg with 12 tackles, a tackle for loss and forced a fumble in the first quarter. Senior Dante Chinnery also forced a fumble and made 11 tackles. First-year Zach Strand paced both teams with 3.0 sacks.

Salisbury's Dakarai Ellis finished with six tackles, one for loss with a fumble recovery and a breakup to earn McGlinchey MVP honors for the Gulls.

The Bobcats await a possible bid to the NCAA Playoffs and the NCAA Division III Men's Football Selection Show will air Sunday, November 12th at 5:30 PM ET on NCAA.com.
