SIXTH-RANKED DELAWARE VALLEY LIVES UP TO BILLING IN 49-14 VICTORY OVER KING'S
DOYLESTOWN -- The Delaware Valley University football team rolled up 637 yards of total offense and an outstanding Aggie defensive unit limited the King's College offense to just 232 total yards in a 49-14 victory Saturday at James Work Memorial Stadium in Doylestown.
Ranked sixth nationally entering the game, Delaware Valley improved to 7-0 overall while improving to 6-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 3-4 and 2-4 in MAC play.
The game started as a defensive battle as neither team would score after six possessions, thanks in large part to four punts and an interception.
The Aggies finally broke through after taking over at its own 19-yard line following a King's punt. Aggie quarterback Dashawn Darden found Khalil Stewart with a 77-yard pass to the King's three. Two plays later Devauntay Ellis scored on a three-yard run and Colin Fasolka added the point-after as the Aggies took a 7-0 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Four possessions later The Aggies took over at the Monarch 45 following a short King's punt. After a 31-yard pass from Darden to Khalil Roan to King's 11, the Aggie signal-caller found Dan Allen for an 11-yard touchdown two plays later to give Delaware Valley a 14-0 lead with 1:19 left in the first quarter.
After another short punt by the Monarchs, the Aggies took over at their own 43. On a third-and-three play, Ellis broke free for a 43-yard run to the Monarch six-yard line. On the next play, Ellis broke free off right tackle for a six-yard Aggie score, pushing the score to 21-0 with 13:30 left in the half.
Two possessions later the Aggies advanced to the King's 38. But on a fourth-and-ten play, Darden found LaQuille Nesbit in the end zone for a 38-yard score. The extra-point failed but the Aggies pushed their lead to 27-0 with 10:26 left in the half.
King's best scoring chance of the first half came on the next Monarch possession when King's drove to the Aggie five-yard line. But on a fourth-and-three play, the Monarchs bypassed a field goal try to attempt to secure the first down. But a pass at the goal line fell incomplete as the Aggies kept King's off the scoreboard.
Delaware Valley would respond with a 95-yard drive, capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Darden to John Graham to push the lead to 34-0 with 2:54 to go in the half, a lead the Aggies would take into the break.
The Aggie defense held the Monarchs to a season-low 89 yards in the first half while amassing 388 total yards of their own.
On the opening possession of second half was forced to punt. But the Monarchs caught a break when the Aggies fumbled and Malcolm Johnston recovered at the Delaware Valley 16. Three plays later quarterback Zach Whitehead found Marquis Miller for a seven-yard touchdown to get the Monarchs on the board. Mike Tumminello added the extra-point as King's cut the lead to 34-7 with 11:49 left in the third quarter.
But the Aggies countered with a score of its own. Delaware Valley reached the Monarch 35 when Roane took a lateral pass from Darden and the Aggie quarterback slipped free down out of the backfield and down the right sideline for a 35-yard touchdown reception. Delaware Valley made good on the two-point conversion on a run by Vian Dolo as the Aggies upped the lead to 42-7 with 10:16 to go in the third quarter.
Following another King's punt, the Aggies would 41 yards into King's territory and eventually scored on a 26-yard pass from Darden to Aaron Nelson. The point-after kick pushed the score to 49-7 with 11:15 remaining in the contest.
King's answered with a 10-play, 59-yard drive, culminating with a one-yard run by Whitehead to bring the score to 49-14 with 8:20 to play. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
The Aggies were balanced on offense with 397 passing yards and 240 rushing yards. Darden completed 17-of-34 passes for 357 yards and four touchdowns while Ellis ran for 131 yards on 21 carries for two scores.
For King's, Whitehead completed 16-of-42 passes for 160 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Miller had six catches for 70 yards and one score while Tyler Marroni also caught six passes for 67 yards. Titus Nelson led the King's running game with 44 yards on six carries.
King's will be off next week and will return to action October 28 at home against FDU-Florham.
