DOVER, Del. – The No. 14/16 Wesley College football team notched a 29-9 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win over the Kean Cougars as part of Wesley's homecoming festivities.
Wesley picked up 428 yards of total offense. Tailback E.J. Lee carried the ball 29 times for 185 yards, his sixth consecutive 100-plus yard game of the season and his second-highest total of the season. Quarterback Khaaliq Burroughs went 12-of-22 passing for 145 yards and a touchdown.
Tight end Andrew Eagle led the Wesley receivers with a three catch, 87-yard effort. James Okike also caught three passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Alex Kemp and Dan Kesack each reeled in to passes from Burroughs.
The Wesley defense held Kean to 28 rushing yards a picked off four Charles App passes. Cappadonna Miller led the Wolverines with eight tackles and an interception. Mike Sabino and Samer Manna each tallied seven stops. Manna added a tackle for loss while Sabino added an interception. Coray Williams, Greg Taylor and Stefon Woodruff each recorded five tackles. Williams picked off a pass and Woodruff registered two tackles for loss and a sack. DaJahn Lowery also intercepted an App pass for the Wolverines.
On special teams, Nick Bruhn went 2-of-2 in field goal attempts and hit all three of his point-after attempts. Bruhn also had an average of 38 yards on his three punts.
Wesley capped off their opening drive of the game when Burroughs found Okike streaking down the sideline with a 26-yard touchdown connection. Bruhn's extra point gave Wesley the 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.
On the first drive of the second quarter, Wesley capitalized on a short punt by Kean to go up 14-0 when Lee pushed through the Kean defensive line for a five-yard touchdown run.
Kean got their first points on the board on the ensuing drive when Jameer Campbell kicked a 33-yard field goal.
Wesley didn't take long to respond to Kean's field goal when Lee had a 38-yard touchdown run set up by a Burroughs to Okike 31-yard pitch-and-catch.
After a Lowery interception put the ball in Kean territory, Bruhn hit a 40-yard field goal with 7:40 remaining in the first half to give Wesley the 24-3 lead over Kean.
Bruhn added another field goal with 1:26 left in the first half from 46 yards out after a long 70-yard pass completion from Kemp to Eagle on double-reverse pass.
Right before the half, Jefferies came through with a blocked punt and went out in the back of the end zone for a safety to give Wesley the 29-3 lead into the halftime break.
Kean was driving inside the Wesley red zone at the start of the second half when Miller tipped an App pass into the air on the goal line and Sabino came down with an interception.
On the first play of Kean's next possession, Williams picked off App to give Wesley the turn A turnover unfortunately ended the following drive for Wesley.
Kean got their first touchdown of the game after the Wesley turnover in the fourth quarter when App found Rooney for a two-yard touchdown. A failed two-point conversion cut the Wesley lead to 20 but Wesley stymied Kean and kept them off the board for the rest of regulation.
The Wolverines (5-1, 5-0 NJAC) will host the Rowan Profs next Saturday for a conference clash. Kickoff from Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
