William Paterson Suffers Loss at Kean

UNION, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-5, 0-4 NJAC) fell at Kean (2-3, 2-2 NJAC), 56-0, Oct. 7.

 

Senior running back Brian Matthews opened the scoring with a six-yard run at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter, and a blocked field goal led to a nine-yard completion by senior quarterback Charles App to junior wide receiver Amir Archer 1:55 into the second period. A fumble recovered by the Cougars inside the WP-10 resulted in a five-yard App-to-Ben Guarino TD and a 21-0 score with 11:18 left in the first half.

 

App found freshman wide receiver Shaune Oates for a 33-yard touchdown (28-0, 10:31), and App connected with Guarino for a three-yard score and a 35-0 margin with 5:27 on the clock before halftime.

 

A blocked punt recovered in the end zone pushed Kean's lead to 42-0 less than two minutes into the second half, and a 36-yard interception return made it a 49-0 game at the 12:46 mark of the third quarter.

 

Junior running back Jessey Asare finished the scoring with a 43-yard carry with 7:20 left in the third.

 

Sophomore quarterback Mike Yarosz was 3-10 for 45 yards and an interception, while freshman Marc Carnivale went 3-for-6 for 17 yards and an INT. Junior running back Cahsim Henry carried eight times for 32 yards, and freshman running back William Frese hauled in a 29-yard reception.

 

Junior linebacker Charles Faulkner, sophomore defensive back Tyler Gross and senior linebacker Matt Olivo each made five tackles for the Pioneers.

 

App finished 11-for-15 for 142 yards and four scores. Asare gained 59 yards and scored once on six rushing attempts, while Matthews caught two passes for 43 yards.

 

Senior linebacker Darin Hungerford led the Kean defense with eight tackles (five solo, 2.0 TFL) and an interception. Classmate Bryan Carr added five stops while forcing and recovering a fumble.
