The Hamline football team gave a prime time offensive performance in their home opener Saturday night at Klas Field.
Justice Spriggs threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns and led a rushing game that racked up 181 yards to lead HU past Carleton, 30-19. The Pipers scored in every quarter and never trailed in evening their overall record at 2-2 and their MIAC mark at 1-1.
Spriggs, a junior, hooked up twice with Harrison Jones and once each with Frank Mems and Nick Barber for TD tosses. Brendan Nachtrieb ran in a score as well as part of a balanced attack that saw Hamline control the ball much of the night, finishing with a 36:00-24:00 edge in time of possession.
The St. Anthony, Minn. junior got things headed in the right direction when he found Jones for a 20-yard score to cap a 68-yard drive that opened the game. The Knights tied the game at 6 only to see HU score twice in the second quarter to take an 18-6 lead at halftime. After Carleton moved within five at 18-13, Spriggs delivered a dagger in the form of a 46-yard strike to Barber for the freshman's first college TD. It was part of a big night for Barber, who ended up with eight catches for 134 yards. Spriggs also ran the Knights ragged, carrying the ball 15 times for a career (and game) high 81 yards.
Defensively, Luke Trudell stood out, making a game high 11 tackles, including four solos.
Overall, Hamline outgained Carleton, 468-216.
The Pipers head on the road next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at St. Olaf (1-3, 0-2 MIAC).
