Strong Second Quarter Lifts No. 4 North Central Past WashU

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 30, 2017 – No. 4-ranked North Central College scored 29- points in the second quarter as the Cardinals remained undefeated with a 43-24 win at Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

North Central improved to 4-0 with the win, while WashU dropped its third-straight game and fell to 1-4. The Cardinals are one of 47 teams that are undefeated in NCAA Division III.

WashU jumped in front 10-0 in the first quarter after a 24-yard touchdown reception by sophomore running back John Fisher and a 46-yard field goal by senior Dan Kalvaitis. The field goal for Kalvaitis was a career long. 

North Central QB Broc Rutter guided the Cardinals to 29 points in the second quarter, connecting on 10-of-15 passes for 173 yards and two TDs. Liam Crotty connected on a 34-yard field goal with two seconds left before half to make it 29-10.

North Central outgained WashU 332-117 in the first half, and had a 21:25-8:35 advantage in time of possession. The Cardinals also had 19 first downs and were 8-of-10 on third down.

Fisher scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 4:16 in the third quarter to trim the North Central lead to 36-17. He finished the day with a career-high 68 yards on 15 carries and a TD.

Junior wide receiver Jason Singer added a 32-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Johnny Davidson with 7:26 left in the fourth quarter. Singer finished with a career-high six receptions for 157 yards and a TD. 

Sophomore linebacker Jarrod Huther had 15 tackles, and added a pair of tackles for loss and two sacks, while junior linebacker Jake Coon added 12 stops. Junior defensive back Ben Marcus had 11 tackles and a pass break-up.

North Central had a 501-379 advantage in total offense, and totaled 28 first downs. Davidson was 19-of-30 for 230 yards and two touchdowns.

WashU plays its second road game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Washington and Lee University (2-2). Kickoff is set for Noon (ET) in Lexington, Va.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: North Central leads the all-time series 4-1, and the teams met for the first time since 2007 … Both coaching staffs wore wearing special arm patches in honor of the AFCA's Coach to Cure MD program … The Bears scored in the first quarter for the first time this season … WashU is 18-6 (.783) at home the past five seasons … North Central had a 38:27-21:33 advantage in total offense … The Cardinals were 7-of-7 in the red zone and recorded five sacks.
