William Paterson Drops 45-0 Season-Opening Decision at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The William Paterson football team (0-1) dropped a 45-0 season-opening decision Sept. 2 at RPI (1-0). Junior linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) led all players with 11 tackles.
 
Senior running back Mike Trivins carried for a 13-yard touchdown 3:10 into the contest, and classmate Christian Kapp kicked the extra point to give the Engineers an early 7-0 advantage.
 
Junior defensive back Rory McCarthy's interception gave RPI the ball back inside the WP-25, and five plays later junior quarterback Ed Trimpert found junior running back Rob Law for a four-yard scoring play and a 14-0 lead with 9:12 remaining during the opening period.
 
RPI capped an eight-play, 42-yard drive with a three-yard Ethan Wells rushing touchdown, pushing ahead by a 21-0 count with 3:14 on the clock in the first quarter.
 
Kapp ended the first half with a 23-yard field goal, and the Engineers carried a 24-0 advantage into the locker room.
 
Trimpert's 45-yard completion to junior wide receiver Pat Etter pushed the lead to 31-0 at the 9:22 mark of the third quarter, and Wells tacked on a nine-yard TD run for a 38-0 margin with 2:05 left in the period.
 
Sophomore quarterback Tommy Avery finished the scoring with a one-yard touchdown carry (45-0, 9:37) in the fourth quarter.
 
Sophomore quarterback Mike Yarosz (Montague, N.J./High Point Regional) finished 0-for-6 under center, and senior James Waldron (Edison, N.J./Edison) was 1-for-2 for seven yards. Senior running back Kelvin White Jr. (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) carried seven times for a team-best 49 yards.
 
Faulkner registered his eighth career double-digit tackles total with 11 (six solo, 1.5 TFL), and sophomore linebacker Corey Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) posted seven stops (five solo) while forcing a fumble. Freshman linebacker Shawn Williams (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) chipped in six tackles, five of those solo.
 
Trimpert went 11-for-14 with 161 yards and two touchdowns for RPI. Junior Nick Cella paced the Engineers on the ground with 13 attempts and 95 yards, and senior Johnny Ramsdell caught four passes for 27 yards.
 
Senior defensive back Bryan Hayes and senior linebacker Brandt Beck each made seven tackles for the Engineer defense.
 
William Paterson will travel to Salisbury Saturday, Sept. 9, at 12:00 p.m.
