Football Unable to Stop Generals Running Game

More news about: Sewanee

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Sewanee football team were downed by Washington & Lee thanks to 554 rushing yards by the Generals, as W&L defeats the Tigers, 63-30, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

After each team swapped punts on their respective first possessions, Washington & Lee used a 10 play, 61-yard drive to strike first on the scoreboard. Walker Brand punched the ball into the endzone for the 7-0 lead.

On the next possession, the Tigers also charged down the field and got down to the W&L 27 yard line, but they were unable to finish in the endzone. Michael Jacobs tallied a 44-yard field goal to make it 7-3 in favor of the Generals.

However, the Generals (1-1) did not take long to find the endzone again. Thanks to a 58-yard run by Josh Breece, W&L made it 14-3 after one quarter of play.

Washington & Lee made it 21-3 early in the second quarter. After a interception by Sewanee's Alex Darras, Brand entered the endzone from five yards out for the score.

The Tigers' best chance of a touchdown in the first half came on the next possession. The offense pushed the ball from the Sewanee 35 down to the W&L one-yard line. However, a defensive stop by the Generals defense limited the Purple and Gold to three points off a 20-yard field goal by Michael Jacobs.

The Generals responded with two touchdowns to make it 35-6 at the half.

The Tigers (1-1) opened the second half with a 42-yard field goal to make it 35-9, but W&L scored another touchdown after the field goal with 9:50 left in the third quarter.

W&L scored two more touchdowns before the Purple and Gold scored its first touchdown of the game to make it 56-16 after three quarters of play. Sam Hearn found Allan Puri for the 15-yard score.

In the final stanza, Sewanee scored two touchdowns in the frame. With 8:10 left in the contest, Darras found Puri again for the three-yard score to make it 56-23.

After a W&L score, Darras found Colin May for a 3-yard touchdown reception with 2:27 left in the game.

The Generals' offense pounded out 629 total yards, 554 on the ground, to Sewanee's 476.

Darras finished the game going 13-for-26 with 215 yards and two touchdowns, while Hearn went 9-for-19 with 158 yards and a score. Each quarterback recorded two interceptions.

Puri caught six passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns to lead the passing game for the Tigers.

Lee Menefee recorded a team-best 20 tackles, 11 solos for the Tigers. He also recorded 1.5 tackles for loss, totaling four yards.

Conoly Koontz recorded 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack to go along with six total tackles.

The Tigers return to the gridiron Saturday, as the three-game road swing continues with the second stop at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
