Oles roll past Grinnell, 56-13, in opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Kosey Mitchell rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns as St. Olaf defeated visiting Grinnell College 56-13 in a non-conference football game on Saturday at Manitou Field in the season opener for each school, and the debut of Ole head coach James Kilian.

The Oles scored four times in the final 8:06 of the second quarter to turn a 7-7 tie to a 35-7 lead at the half.

Ricardo Johnson III was 11-for-20 for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson III connected with Ben Smithson for a four-yard TD pass to give the Oles a 14-7 advantage. After Max Karpinske picked up a Grinnell fumble and dashed 60 yards for another score, Johnson III hit Jorgen Salveson for a 22-yard touchdown to make it 28-7.

Karpinske also had an interception, one of three for the St. Olaf defense. Eddie Bryson and Jacob Ossell had the other two. Luke Dahl had a team-high six tackles, including five solo.

Mitchell had scoring runs of nine, one and 13 yards. Jessiah Majest also had a 13-yard TD run in the victory.

Troy Peterson had a team-high six receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown. Smithson had five catches for 68 yards.

Grinnell was led by Tony Bergida, who threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns on 24-of-47. Carson Dunn rushed for 60 yards while David Taylor and Trent Mayfield had touchdown catches.

Kilian becomes the fourth straight St. Olaf football head coach to debut with a victory.
