FROSTBURG, Md. – Seventeenth-ranked Frostburg picked up in 2017 where it left off a year ago with a dominating win over a ranked team. This time it was 18th-ranked Stevenson on the receiving end of a dominating 33-7 win for the Bobcats, Thursday night, before a packed house at Bobcat Stadium.
The Frostburg (1-0) defensive effort was relentless for all four quarters as it held Stevenson to minus-30 yards rushing on 19 carries and allowed just 144 yards on offense behind 46 plays.
Aside from two drives in the first quarter, Frostburg kept Stevenson (0-1) from gaining positive yardage on eight of 13 possessions. The Mustangs' first and third drives of the ballgame resulted in 152 yards in offense, but the Bobcats allowed a combined minus-67 yards on the other 11 possessions.
The Bobcat defense also forced SU to punt seven times and scooped up three fumbles. The exclamation mark of the defensive effort came early in the fourth quarter when senior Pacom Tsague knocked the ball free from Stevenson running back Jainard Crawley-Lamb at the Mustang one and senior Jordan Procter fell on the ball in the end zone that put Frostburg ahead 30-7.
Senior kicker Hassan Mostafa later booted a 26-yard field goal to seal the final at 33-7.
While the defensive effort was impressive, junior running back Grayson Boyce scored all three offensive touchdowns for the Bobcats. He scored from four yards out in the first (5:17), added a three yarder in the second (5:38) and pushed his way in from a yard out in the third (4:14).
Mostafa connected on his first FG try in the second quarter, a 28-yarder at 5:38 and the Bobcats led 17-7 at the half.
Frostburg, which didn't allow the Mustangs past midfield in the second half, scored 16 second-half points behind Boyce, Procter and Mostafa.
Boyce finished with 37 yards on 10 carries, but it was junior Jamaal Morant who led FSU with 71 yards on 18 carries. Sophomore Gavin Lavat also added 40 yards on seven rushes.
Junior quarterback Connor Cox accounted for 175 yards in offense, behind an 11-of-18 passing effort and 145 yards. He connected with senior Joe Beckford for five receptions for 96 yards.
Stevenson's Devin Salisbury hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Dan Williams late in the first quarter that knotted things at 7-7. SU's opening drive of the game saw it march 78 yards to the Frostburg one, but was held out of the end zone, despite all four plays coming inside the FSU three yard line.
Senior Josh Scales led the Bobcats with six tackles, while senior Niles Scott made two tackles for loss and two sacks. In total, the Frostburg defense forced three fumbles and sacked Williams five times.
