Football Clinches Perfect Home Record On Senior Day

More news about: John Carroll

John Carroll football earned their third perfect regular season home record in the last four seasons, defeating Otterbein on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks rolled to a 49-6 victory over the Cardinals at Don Shula Stadium.

Anthony Moeglin completed 17 of his 28 passes for 218 yards on the afternoon; the freshman threw for four touchdowns. Eddie Williamson led all pass catchers for JCU with 56 yards and a TD. Ro Golphin notched his fifth 100-yard game of the year, netting 100 rushing yards on eight carries, including two scores. The junior also caught three passes for 53 yards, highlighted by a 31-yard catch-and-run.

The John Carroll defense held the Cardinals to 209 total yards. This marks the seventh occasion in which the Blue & Gold have contained their opponent under 250 total offensive yards. JCU has not allowed a touchdown in the last 14 quarters.

The nation's fourth-ranked team in total defense was led by Michael Hollins, who recorded seven tackles and picked off two passes. The senior's two first-half interceptions marked a personal career-high for a single game. Mason McKenrick also recorded seven tackles.

Golphin began the proceedings with a 9-yard touchdown scamper at 7:55 in the first quarter. The run, capping off a nine play, 80-yard drive, was the only score in the first 15 minutes.

Moeglin connected with Marshall Howell three minutes into the second quarter; the senior hauled in a six-yard TD over his shoulder in the corner of the endzone. Howell finished the day with three catches; two of them went for scores. The second score came on an athletic play down the JCU sideline four minutes later. Howell's tip-toe past the pylon finished off a 12-yard connection and gave JCU a 21-0 lead.

Otterbein earned their first points on a 23-yard field goal by Joe Sanfillipo with 4:32 left in the half. JCU put the final touches on a 28-3 first half when Moeglin tossed his third TD pass to Williamson from seven yards out with 1:22 remaining.

The second half began with another score, as Golphin exploded into the defensive backfield and outran the Cardinals for a 58-yard TD. Sanfilippo made a second field goal at 6:54, making the score 35-6. Senior Nico James caught an 11-yard strike from Moeglin at 9:30, extending the lead to 42-6.

The final score came when Josh DeLozier rushed for 17 yards, making it 49-6.

John Carroll now heads into a showdown with the nation's top-ranked team, the University of Mount Union (8-0, 7-0 OAC). Kickoff with the Purple Raiders is set for 1:30 p.m. in Alliance, Ohio on Nov. 12. The winner of the game will be crowned the champions of the Ohio Athletic Conference.
