ITHACA, N.Y.—Buffalo State was held to just 195 yards of total offense and was shutout for the first time since 2009 in a 7-0 loss to Ithaca today in an Empire 8 game at Butterfield Stadium.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE

  • The Bengals finished with just 93 rushing yards and 102 yards in the air.  The defense kept the Bomber in check as well, surrendering just 79 rushing yards and 203 passing.
  • Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) finished 9 of 18 for 102 yards and was sacked three times.
  • Bart Mazzara (Lockport/Starpoint) led the Bengals defense with 15 tackles. 
  • Khalil Sommerville (Buffalo/Bennett) had 1.5 of the Bengals' three sacks. 
  • Tre Jones (Rochester/Greece-Athena) registered 72 yards on 16 carries, and Madison Wesolowski (Elma/Iroquois) had five catches for 64 yards.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a game that took just two hours and 15 minutes, Ithaca produced the only offense of the day in the first quarter.  Jordan Schemm returned a punt 51 yards and Ithaca went the final 12 yards on three plays, capped by an 8-yards pass from Wolfgang Shafer to Will Gladney with 5:34 remaining in the period.
  • The Bengals drove into Ithaca territory on the ensuing possession, but turned the ball over on downs on a fourth-and-1 from the 36.
  • The Bombers returned the favor failing to convert on a fourth-and-6 from the Bengals' 22 on the next possession.
  • Ithaca turned it over on downs again on its next possession, throwing an incomplete pass on a fourth-and-4 from the Buffalo State 30.
  • The Bengals marched 67 yards on their first possession of the second half and Hoppy scrambled for 10 yards on a fourth-and-4 from, but fumbled at the Ithaca 24, and Schemm came up with the recovery. 
  • After trading punts again, Ithaca drove deep into Bengal territory early in the fourth quarter, before Sommerville blocked a 20-yard field goal attempt by the Bombers.
  • After a couple more punts, the Bengals were unable to convert a four-and-5 from the Ithaca 46, and the Bombers were able to run out the final 4:30 with a nine-play, 47-yard drive.
  • Buffalo State punted six times and was 2 for 11 on third downs and 0 for 3 on fourth downs.

 

FOR THE FOES

  • Shafer finished 15 of 21 for 203 yards and one touchdown. 
  • Tristan Brown rushed for 71 yards on 21 carries, while Jack Yule had four catches for 64 yards and Gladney finished with three grabs for 56 yards.
  • Schemm led the Bombers defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble and fumble recorvery.
 

NOTEWORTHY

  • This was the first time Buffalo State has been shutout since a 37-0 defeat against Kean on Oct. 10, 2009.
 

UP NEXT

Buffalo State will close out the season next Saturday with the annual I-90 Bowl at Brockport.
