MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Freshman Tony Martignoli (Santa Rosa, Calif.) racked up 199 receiving yards and one touchdown in Nichols College's 52-14 loss at Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon in New England Football Conference (NEFC) action at Gaudet Field.
Salve Regina senior quarterback Brandan Basil (Northford, Conn.) threw for 282 yards and five touchdowns on just 10 completions. Freshman Brendan Nunes (Attleboro, Mass.) caught two of those scoring strikes and finished with three receptions for 74 yards while seniors David Mavilia (Scituate, Mass.) and Chris Caron (Northford, Conn.), along with junior Tommy Seaver (Rocky Hill, Conn.), each caught one touchdown. The Seahawks compiled 594 yards of offense and averaged 9.3 yards per play.
Caron opened the scoring with a 71-yard touchdown catch in the first, but the Bison responded with a TD pass to Martignoli less than four minutes later to tie the score. The Seahawks scored 14 unanswered points to grab a 21-7 second-quarter lead before Abbruzzese capped a four-play, 60-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown reception at 6:34. Salve Regina scored the final 31 points of the contest, highlighted by a 50-yard TD pass to Nunes and a 41-yard scoring pass to Seaver.
Defensively, the Seahawks recovered a pair of fumbles and also intercepted Mullins twice.
