Shenandoah Swats Wasps

EMORY, Va. – A 21-point third quarter keyed a 36-33 ODAC football victory for Shenandoah over Emory and Henry Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium.

Trailing 20-13 to start the second half, Shenandoah (3-2, 1-1 ODAC) scored a pair of long touchdowns in the initial 2:31 of the third quarter to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Sophomore Jalen Hudson scored both TDs – he returned the second half kickoff 87 yards to knot the contest at 20-20, and after the Wasps (1-4, 0-2) went three-and-out on their initial drive, took a Hayden Bauserman swing pass 76 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

The Hornets again held E&H to a three-and-out and then drove 81 yards in 15 plays to extend their lead out to 34-20. The drive ended on a Mario Wisdom 1-yard plunge on 4th-and-goal.

Emory & Henry appeared to get itself back into the contest by finishing off a five-play, 66-yard drive with a Sam Wagner 1-yard run on the first play of the fourth, but the SU special teams again stepped up.

The Hornets blocked the ensuing PAT and Josh White returned the blocked kick for the 2-point conversion that put the Shenandoah lead at 10, 36-26.

"That was the play of the game," SU head coach Scott Yoder said. "Instead of having a seven-point lead, we were up 10 and they (E&H) had to score twice."

The Wasps made matters interesting by scoring their final touchdown with 61 seconds left, but their on-side kick went out-of-bounds and the Hornets were able to take a knee three times to kill the clock.

The second half was in stark contrast to a first half in which Emory and Henry scored the first 13 points of the game and held Shenandoah to zero yards in total offense in the first quarter.

SU got on the positive side of the yardage ledger on a Bauserman to Cedrick Delaney 50-yard screen pass for a touchdown, and after E&H scored a third TD to lead 20-7, drove 80 yards in seven plays to make the score 20-13 with 1:54 in the second quarter.

Delaney, who finished with 137 yards rushing on 23 carries, finished that drive with a 1-yard TD run.

"As bad as things were going, we kept them close and that was huge for us," Yoder said. "We didn't make any big adjustments at halftime, we just played better.

"The key was that we kept them within striking distance so we could make that comeback."

Emory & Henry outgained SU 649 to 376 with the Wasps running for 344 and passing for 305. After possessing the ball for 19:18 in the first half, E&H only possessed the ball for 13:00 over the final 30 minutes.
