UMHB rolls over Howard Payne 59-10

Brownwood, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team dominated the first half and the Cru rolled to a 59-10 victory over Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Brownwood. UMHB improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the ASC on the season.

UMHB forced a fumble on the first offensive play of the game and made it pay off with Blake Jackson's eight-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Josey. Jackson added a two-yard scoring run on the next Cru drive to make it 14-0. Bryce Wilkerson added a 40-yard punt return for a score and Raylon Hickey returned an interception 58 yards for his first collegiate touchdown to put UMHB up 28-0. Duane Thompson scored on a nine-yard run after another interception for a 35-0 edge before Ivy Smith scored on an 83-yard screen pass and run for HPU's only touchdown of the game. Josey added touchdown grabs of 57 yards from Jackson and five yards from Kyle Jones to give the Cru a 49-7 halftime lead. HPU kicked a field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it 49-10 before UMHB closed it out with Markeith Miller's one-yard TD plunge and Martin Guzman's 36-yard field goal to provide the final margin.

The Cru finished with 335 yards of total offense on 66 plays and turned the ball over just once. The UMHB defense forced five turnovers and held Howard Payne to 72 rushing yards and 233 yards of total offense.

Jackson was 5-6 passing for 96 yards and two TD's and he added 14 yards and a score on the ground before leaving the game with 7:33 left in the second quarter. Jones went 10-16 through the air for 92 yards and a score. Josey caught four passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns and Thompson ran for 54 yards and a touchdown on ten carries. Baylor Mullins intercepted the 15th pass of his UMHB career to tie Brett Parker's school record and Matt Cody led the Cru with seven tackles.

Cassion Monteith threw for 145 yards and a touchdown and added 26 rushing yards for HPU. Smith had one catch for 83 yards and the lone TD. Jason Disney topped the Yellow Jackets with 11 total tackles and he added a 31-yard field goal and an extra point.

UMHB will return to action with a 1:00 PM showdown at 17th-ranked East Texas Baptist next Saturday in Marshall. The Cru shared the ASC title with ETBU and Hardin-Simmons last season.
