REDLANDS — Bryan Scott and a pair of emerging weapons had another good day on offense, but the Occidental football team still couldn't keep up with Redlands, losing its SCIAC opener 63-29 on the road on Saturday.
Scott, a First Team All-SCIAC selection last season, was 29 of 46 for 311 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also scrambled to keep plays alive and made plays with his legs, running for 61 yards a touchdown.
The senior from Rolling Hills is completing 65 percent of his passes and leads the SCIAC with 356 yards per game, eight touchdowns and just one interception this season.
Scott is getting more and more help from running back Max Gruber and tight end Dan Gittelman-Egan.
Gruber, a versatile senior who's played wide receiver and running back, had his first 100+ yard rushing day, finishing with 22 carries for 101 yards and one touchdown. His longest carry was a 20-yarder.
Gittelman-Egan caught 10 passes for 111 yards, nearly matching his outstanding Week 2 performance. In Oxy's last game, the sophomore converted quarterback broke out for 122 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Scott also found his top target Cordell Harris eight times for 73 yards and a touchdown, and Carlton O'Neal four times for 35 yards and a score.
Harris is leading the conference with nearly nine receptions a game for 87 yards.
Chris Garcia led Oxy's defense with 14 tackles and Marcus McDuffie made seven.
The Tigers return home next weekend to face undefeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Jack Kemp Stadium.
