Hendrix Defeats Centre 35-28, Moves to 4-0

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College football team remained undefeated with a 35-28 Southern Athletic Association victory over Centre College at Crafton-Faulkner Field at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Warriors (4-0, 2-0) were led by senior quarterback Seth Peters who rushed for a career-high 178 yards and a touchdown and threw for another 308 and two scores. His 486 yards of total offense became a new school record.

On defense, senior defensive end Gray Stanton led Hendrix on defense with eight tackles, including 3.5 for a loss and a sack.

Hendrix opened the game with with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Peters to junior Nate Hodapp. After a three-and-out for the Colonels (4-1, 2-1), the Warriors scored again on one-yard run from senior running back Dayton Winn. Centre answered on their next drive with a 19-yard pass from Devin Hayes to Colin Bradley. Peters connected with Hodapp again for a five-yard score, capping off an 11-play, 89-yard drive and make the game 21-7 at the end of the first.

Centre scored in the second quarter on a 27-yard pass from Hayes to Cody Estep, then missed the extra point. Hendrix scored on their next drive when Peters avoided a tackle in the backfield then ran for 54 yards before finding the endzone. The Colonels made the game 28-21 just before halftime on a 14-yard pass to Duncan Mercer. They converted a reverse and a pass from Estep to Hayes for a two-point conversion.

Centre ran 12 plays and went 69 yards on their opening drive of the third quarter. It was capped on a 15-yard pass from Hayes to Nolan Coulter to even the game at 28-28. After a three-and-out for the Warriors, they got the ball back when junior Kody Smith picked off a pass deep in Hendrix territory. Peters' rush for 68 plus a Colonel facemask penalty put Hendrix on the Centre nine. Peters rushed again to the 1, then Winn punched it in on a sweep to the right to give the Warriors the 35-28 lead with 6:32 left in the third quarter.

For the rest of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, the squads traded punts and turnovers on downs. Centre punted giving Hendrix the ball on their own three yard line with 8:35 left in the game. The Warriors managed to run out the clock on 13 plays, and getting down to the Colonel six before taking a knee on the final two plays.

Hendrix finished the game with 296 yards rushing and 308 passing for 575 total yards and an average of 7.5 per play. Centre only managed 83 yards on the ground but had 336 yards in the air for a total of 419 yards and 5.7 per play.

Hendrix Notes
- Peters' rushing total was the second 100-yard game of his career and first since 2013. His 68-yard run was the second longest in program history.
- Peters was 24-of-37 for 308 yards and two touchdowns.
- Winn recorded 17 carries for 89 yards and two TDs.
- Hodapp tied his career-high with 10 catches for 142 yards and two scores.
- Senior Ethan Hoppe caught four passes for 81 yards.
- Stanton's 3.5 tackles for a loss is the second most in program history.
- Junior safety Michael Kramer also had eight tackles and two pass break-ups.
- Senior linebacker Ben Cunningham tallied seven tackles.
- Senior Harrison Newton recorded 1.5 sacks, Jake Falleur had one and Tyler Clifton had half a sack.

Centre Notes
- Quarterback Devin Hayes was 23-of-43 for 336 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 35 yards.
- Bradley led the receivers with seven catches for 74 yards.
- Mercer had six receptions for 83 yards and Estep had five for 95.
- Andrew Busby led the Colonel defense with nine tackles.
- Trey Yeager had eight tackles and a sack.
- Ben Bostick recorded seven tackles and a sack.
- Cal Lewellyn had seven tackles and an interception.
