THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Alfred University – 34, Buffalo State - 10
LOCATION:  Coyer Field, Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS:  Alfred University (3-0/1-0), Buffalo State (1-1/0-1)

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE

  • Dale Stewart (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) provided the lone bright spot for the Bengals, rushing for more than 100 yards for the second-consecutive game, piling up 154 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
  • Senior quarterback Aaron Ertel (Depew/Depew), filling in for an injured Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park), finished just 3 of 8 for 32 yards, completing two passes on the final two plays of the game.  The Bengals spent much of the day in the "wildcat" with Stewart in the backfield.
  • Linebacker Bart Mazzara (Lockport/Starpoint) led the Bengals' defense with a career-best 17 tackles.
  • Dametrius Brown (Syracuse/CBA) and Khalil Sommerville (Buffalo/Bennett) added 12 stops apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Buffalo State's offense had the ball for just 16:02, compared to 43:58 by the Saxons.  Alfred piled up 412 yards of offense, including 252 on the ground, while the Bengals finished with 196 total yards.  Neither team committed a turnover.
  • The Saxons also had 26 first downs, compared to just seven by Buffalo State.
  • Alfred took a 20-7 lead in the first half, which was played primarily in a heavy rain, on three rushing touchdowns by Johnson.  His 22-yard scoring run was the only score of the first quarter, and then he extended the lead to 13-0 with a 12-yard carry early in the second frame.
  • Stewart got loose for a 55-yard score on the ensuing possession, but Johnson pushed the margin back to two scores with a 3-yard run with 1:33 remaining in the first half.
  • After the skies cleared, Buffalo State converted the opening possession of the second half into a 33-yard field goal by Marc Montana (E. Amherst/St. Joe's), but that would be as close as the Bengals would get.
  • The Saxons answered with a 66-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard run for Johnson's fourth score of the day, and Maleke Fuentes finished off the scoring with a 1-yard run of his own with 2:00 remaining in the game.

FOR THE FOES

  • Johnson finished 11 of 18 passing for 160 yards and had 92 rushing yards with four touchdowns on 19 attempts.
  • Fuentes added 88 yards and a score on 12 carries, and Casey Bright finished with 77 yards on 25 rushes.
  • Ralph Pagliei was the leading receiver with four catches for 66 yards.
  • A.J. Licata led the Saxons' defense with seven tackles, including one for loss.
