William Paterson Football Falls in NJAC Opener at Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Rowan (2-0, 1-0 NJAC) pulled away late from visiting William Paterson (1-1, 0-1 NJAC) for a 31-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) football victory Sept. 16.

 

The two sides traded three-and-outs until a missed 33-yard field goal by the Profs with 6:28 remaining in the opening quarter. Rowan was able to find paydirt on its next possession, capping a nine-play, 49-yard drive with a 14-yard pass by junior quarterback Dante Pinckney to junior wide receiver Jamel Smith. Junior Tyler Knighton kicked the extra point and the Profs owned a 7-0 edge with 39 seconds left in the first period.

 

Freshman defensive back Ra'Keem Bennett (Linden, N.J./Carteret) ended Rowan's next possession with an interception at the Pioneer-23 with 10:41 to play in the second quarter, and the teams entered the locker room separated by just seven points.

 

Rowan came up with the first big play of the game, a 59-yard Pinckney completion to senior wide receiver Zac Frantz to make it a 14-0 game with 8:46 on the clock in the third quarter.

 

Knighton's 25-yard field goal was good early in the fourth period (17-0, 14:00), and a three-yard Gawain Bragg carry made it a 24-0 Prof lead with 9:54 remaining. Junior wide receiver Dashown Waller later turned a short screen pass into a 47-yard score with 3:42 left to finish the scoring.

 

Junior quarterback James Waldron (Edison, N.J./Edison) finished 8-for-17 for 42 yards. Senior wide receiver Malcolm Robinson (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) caught two passes for 14 yards, while sophomore running back Cahsim Henry (Lindenwold, N.J./Lindenwold) carried four times for 10 yards while hauling in three passes for 14 yards.

 

Junior linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) made a team-best 14 tackles (1.0 TFL), sophomore defensive back Haneef Jennings (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) collected 11 stops and freshman linebacker Taheem Jackson (East Orange, N.J./East Orange Campus) posted 10 tackles (1.0 TFL).

 

Pinckney went 17-for-27 for 258 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for Rowan. Bragg gained 51 yards and scored a TD on 16 rushing attempts, and Waller caught five passes for 91 yards and a score.

 

Senior defensive lineman Anthony Rizzolo led the Profs with eight tackles (1.0 TFL, 0.5 sack), and junior defensive lineman Chris Henchy added seven stops (1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack).

 

The Pioneers will host Kean Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1:00 p.m.
