SELINSGROVE, PA – The Johns Hopkins defense came within 56 seconds of posting its first shutout in four years and the Blue Jay offense rolled up 555 yards of total offense en route to a 41-7 victory at Susquehanna Saturday afternoon. Johns Hopkins, ranked 11th in the most recent D3football.com Poll, improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Rivers Hawks slip to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.

The Blue Jays rang up 306 yards of total offense in the first half alone and pushed a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter to 24-0 at the half as they scored on their first three possessions of the second quarter.

A 21-yard Nick Campbell field goal just seven seconds into the period pushed the lead to 10-0 and Hopkins added a one-yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Germano to Quinn Donaldson five minutes later and a 22-yard scoring run by junior Ryan Cary with just over five minutes left in the period to account for their second-quarter scoring.

While the Blue Jay offense was scoring on four of its first five possessions, the Johns Hopkins defense held the River Hawks to just 125 yards of offense before halftime and Susquehanna never moved inside the Blue Jay 37-yard line in the opening two quarters.

A 45-yard return by Bradley Munday on the opening kickoff of the second half set the Blue Jays up at midfield and Hopkins covered 50 yards in nine plays with Germano hitting Munday from nine-yards out to push the lead to 31-0 just over three minutes into the second half.

The 31-point lead held until the first play of the fourth quarter, when sophomore quarterback Zack Baker capped an eight-play, 54-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to give Hopkins a 38-0 lead. An 18-yard Nick Campbell field goal closed out the scoring for Johns Hopkins with four minutes remaining.

Susquehanna avoided the shutout in the final minute as quarterback Matt Thies scored on a four-yard run with 56 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Thies run polished off an eight-play, 80-yard drive; the 80 yards the River Hawks totaled on the final drive were nearly one-quarter of their 338-yards on the day.

Defensively, Johns Hopkins held Susquehanna to a combined 1-of-14 on third and fourth-down conversion attempts and came up with three sacks. Senior linebacker Jack Campbell led the Blue Jays with eight tackles, while senior Jack Toner added five tackles and his first interception of the season.

The 555-yard offensive performance was fueled by 393 combined passing yards from Germano and Baker. Germano was 21-of-33 for 293 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions, while Baker was 10-of-10 for 100 yards and both added a rushing touchdown.

Susquehanna's Thies and Bobby Grigas combined to go 20-of-41 for 221 yards through the air while Tommy Bluj had a game-high six receptions for 58 yards. Connor Thompson posted 11 tackles and was in on one of the River Hawks' two sacks in the game.

Johns Hopkins, which ran its regular season winning streak to 33 games and its September winning streak to 25 with the victory, will return to action on Saturday, September 17 when the Blue Jays host Moravian in a key early-season Centennial Conference game at Homewood Field.
